COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cloaked in mystery, this dark black beer skirts the line between a schwarzbier and smoked porter. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolatey malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally sourced ingredients. OG 14.5 Plato

Good shit. 500mL bottle poured into a plastic cup at a hotel room while I watch Mark Wahlberg in Contraband, which pairs well with the beer. Despite all this the beer looks good. It pours with a medium thick head that leaves behind a slug of lacing. The beer, well, its almost a perfect melding of schwarz and rauch, equal parts represented without either dominating. The shwarz has a great chocolate lagered aspect and a smoked element that is present but nicely subdued into the black lager. Super clean with no flaws and so damn quaffable, I drank this up like it was nothing in a few minutes. I only picked up a single but I see why these are sold in 4 packs that were priced for $10.50, which seems like a great price point for such quality.

6oz sample from a 12oz bottle purchased at the beer cabin in Plattsburgh. The aroma has some smoked malts with a little tinny, metallic character. Light roast, too. Transparent ruddy mahogany body with a medium light tan head present. Starts with mild smoke and some metallic sweetness. The middle is a bit thin and watery. Finishes with a little roast. A bit thin. Kind of lacking body, but smoke is decent.

From 12oz bottle, variety pack $16, poured into 16oz tulip glass

Aroma: roasted malts, coffee, caramel

Appearance: black with tan head

Taste: Light bitter

Palate: medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation, crisp bitter finish

Overall: Really enjoy this. Reminds me a lot of a really great schwarzbier. Nice aroma and wonderful balance of roasted and chocolate malts. Very rich malty taste with some smokey aromas. A very solid dark, lightly smoked, lager. Nice clean, crisp taste.

Bottle. Dark brown with a small quickly dissipating tan head. The nose has some roasted malt, syrup, light toffee. The flavour offers mild smoke, roasted malt, figs, light caramel and toffee. Medium body, the texture feels a bit thin and sticky, prickling carbonation. Some sweetness, balanced bitterness. Soft finish with roasted malt. Ok, but doesn’t excite me much.

Bottles and draught from debut onwards, most recently Spring 2015.
Dark ebony, though in the light it reveals garnet-tinged mahogany edges and a good clarity. Head is a dark beige and small, with moderate to low retention.
THEY FIXED IT!! I wanted to love this beer forever but was unable to do so on account of the horribly bready/vinous flavors that some malt or other was imparting. It dominated even the smokiness and just made the beer a chore to drink. Granted, this one is a dark lager at nearly 6% and not every smoked is going to be Schlenkerla Helles lager....but still, I could barely choke down a bottle/pint of the stuff. So I gave up on it for a few years and within the past 6 months or so, I randomly tried it again and was very pleased to discover that they’d completely cut that out. Now it’s just rich malty caramel flavors with some brown sugar and brown bread balanced by a subtle phenolic smokey dryness and juicy, floral hoppiness.
Overall, a medium to medium-full body but tightly carbonated and not intensely sweet (though certainly tending on the sweet side). I can appreciate the restraint on the smoked malts too, as this is a semi-flagship and it thus needs to appeal to a larger crowd. Wonderful texture, good smokiness and malt flavors, no qualms here.

Draft at Bierstube. Clear very dark ruby brown pour with a large frothy beige head. Rows of lace. Unexpected creamy body. Lots of roasted malts. Pecans. Chocolate cocoa. Very modest rauchbier smokiness. Drinkable but lacking direction.

Big beige head. Clear reddish brown body with light carbonation. Smoky creosote aroma with syrupy caramel notes. Sweet earthy mineraly syrup taste with roasty butterscotch and caramel notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, buttery mouthfeel. Sweetish earthy toasted rice aftertaste with roasty butterscotch and chocolate notes. Minerals, too. Nice, interesting, drinkable. (0.355l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

Bottle at Stoneforge in Raynham, MA. Deep brown pour with some amber highlights. Creamy head. Mild smoke and bittersweet chocolate aroma. Similar taste. Good, but I wanted to like it even more.

Bottle date of 03/19/2015. This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a dark brown color with hues of hazy burnt brown coloring around the sides. A one finger white foamy head started and strolled down the sides of the glass. The smell started off with the "meaty" portion and light smoke. As it warmed, a light chocolate aligned to balance. The taste was a balance between the smoke, meaty, and a slight roasty quality to let in a tad of chocolate to balance nicely. There’s no aftertaste nor finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonated finely, a nice smooth roasty quality strolls nicely over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good Schwarzbier that I would have again.
