At Maakun’s. Bottle. Sweet but also dusty raspberry candy. "Thanks gramps....". Less sweet than the kriek. Very much like lemonade.

Bottle shared thanks to Sjogro. Clear red with light pink head. Raspberry syrup, cooked raspberries, cherry candy, pear drop candy, light artificial sweetener bitterness under the medium sweetness. Medium bodied. Not very good.

Bottle from Terre de Boissons Calais and drunk at home. Clear deep red colour lasting pink head. I can smell it from about a foot away. Sweet jammy raspberry fruit aroma. Sweet as hell in the mouth. It’s not horrible, it’s not got any off flavours. It’s sweet but fine. What can I say? It’s drinkable.

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2015 One of those extremely sweet ’fruit beers’ which became popular after the launch of Belle-Vue Extra years ago, and of which Kriek Max of the same brewery can be viewed as the epitome. This is a raspberry version sweetened with acesulfame potassium, otherwise known as E650, a chemical also used as a sweetener in protein shakes and pharmaceutical products - glad I have this information, but it does not elicit a lot of trust. Clear ruby red colour with cinnabar hue and almost no fizz, under a medium thick but breaking, off-pinkish head. Aroma is one-sidedly and sickly sweet with an artificial, lemonade-like sourish touch: grenadine, industrial raspberry ice cream, Fanta Strawberry ascorbic acid, faint hints of earth, plastic and soapy wheat. Taste starts very sugary, cloying, with an artificial lemonade ascorbic sourishness alongside; the sickly sweetness keeps dominating, adding a fake raspberry flavour, Fanta Raspberry again springs to mind; artificial carbonation, slick and thin mouthfeel, wheat somewhere underneath as a soapy, softly sourish base along with a certain, vague barley graininess, but all of this keeps being overpowered by sugar and artificial, chemical raspberry; the lemonade-like ascorbic acidity does dry the mouth a bit, but not in a good way, I get a strong feeling of ’zure beertjes’, with some graininess lingering around somewhere in the finish, but even there the ascorbic acidity and the sticky ’acesulfame potassium’ sweetness persist - and to make things worse, a chemical wryness, probably the inherent bitter aspect of this acesulfame potassium, shows up in the very end as well. This is liquid red candy in more than one sense, and I hate the artificial sweetness of candy with a passion. Absolutely disgusting, even in its style. Only suitable for die-hard candy lovers and people who hate the taste of actual beer. This kind of beverages are as far removed from ’craft beer’ as any mass-produced lager, or even further.

250 ml bottle bought at Sips in Sai Wan.

Cloudy hazy pale dull rose red colour with faint trace of yeast sediments; Very thin head with soapy off-white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with very small carbonation; Fragrant tart aroma of raspberry juice, with strong yoghurt, Ribena, sugar, tannic, very light malt, yeast and shades of raw grass; Very strong tart taste of malt, with raspberry juice, strong tannic, very light yoghurt, celery, light molasses notes, faint red wine, yeast and very light grassy hops; Light body; thin and dry palate; Mouth feel is yoghurty tart light malt with very low sweet raspberry and light celery. The yoghurt taste is lighter than the aroma. Light red wine notes makes it taste more like a dry fruit lambic than juiced fruit beer. Pretty good!... Hoppiness is notes of raw grass in nose and very light grass in taste. Very low bitterness, mostly tannic finish; Fairly dry after taste. Tart and easy to mouth.

Comments: This one has an odd and somewhat artificial Ribena nose, but is surprisingly good with very yoghurty Lambic elements, very low sweetness, strong raspberry, malt and tannic taste with a fair touch of celery. Way better than most cloying Belgian fruit beers, a nice choice for chilling out after a hard day!
