COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Danish: Imperial Barley Wine is a contribution to the evolution of the beer culture in Denmark. It is an experimental and seductive brew with a spicy flavor and aromas of both caramel, vanilla and cinnamon. Imperial Barley Wine has a high ABV at 10,1% and is brewed with three different yeasts both top yeast, bottom yeast and whisky yeast, that gives the beer a vinous aroma.

Note: Only availble on draught at the bar and bottled in the shop of The Carlsberg Visitors Centre & The Jacobsen Brewhouse.

75cl bottle, via Storm. Pours a crystal clear amber to copper body with a very thin fizzy off-white head that dissipated very quickly leaving no trace of head whatsoever. The nose is sharply alcoholic with some caramel covered Granny Smith apple. Reminds me of a liquor or schnapps of some kind that I can’t place. Spicy notes ride the alcohol vapors to the back of my throat, leaving a cinnamon red-hots footprint behind. A little unusual for a Barley Wine. The flavor is heavily malty with lots of residual sugars up front, but fades to this weird combo of cinnamon and alcohol burn on the finish. There’s no depth to this at all, what you get on the surface is all that’s there. There might be a touch of bad oxidation setting in as well, which isn’t a good sign for a huge 10% beer that’s only 18 months old. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and despite all the brown and turbinado sugar flavor it’s not all that sticky or cloying. The carbonation is a little annoyingly fizzy and prickly for my tastes. Overall, this is certainly big, but a little unrefined and lacking in direction. Filtering the crap out of it couldn’t have helped either.

Previously lost notes from GBBF 2006. A sweet overdone barley wine with hot alcohol and no balance. A bit of cardboard too. Not good.

Ordered as, and noted down as jacobsen imperial barley wine 2011 - cph beerfest. I am in doubt if this is actually what i got, i remember something was missing, was it 2011 or imperial?. murky brown, no head. malty faint aroma, flavor is boozy, sweet caramel, flowery, a liitle too caramelly to be really good.

Habanero (1257) - Tranbjerg, DENMARK - APR 17, 2010
Bottled. Pours hazy, deep golden with an 1 1/2 finger high off-wite head, quickly dimnishing. Nose of caramel, vanilla and alcohol. Sweet flavour of caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, mildl roasted malt and prunes. Full bodied. Oily texture.. Ends up more dry with a little bitterness. This one has maneged the storage quite well. An OK brew.

(on bottle) Dark orange, small white head. Oxyged and moulded aroma. Sticky and allmost oily in the mouthfeel. A beer very much over the top and how can a 10.1% B.W be that? Again, Carlsberg makes me wonder........

Amber with no head. Sweet aroma of dried fruits, raisins and vine. The palate is very oily and the flavours sweet caramel-like with lots of overripe fruits and alcohol. A very nice barley wine.

Bottled. Tasting @ Kolding Bryglaug. Bottle 04986. 2003. Aroma is a bit dusty, sweetish, has raisin and is fruity. Slightly hazy, copper amber coloured with an off-white, thin head. Taste is sweet, bit dusty, sugary, vinous/porty, has raisin, fruits and some caramel malts. Is already a bit flat. So don’t age this one for more than 5 years.
