UPDATED: JUN 7, 2011 I honestly didn’t even realize this was supposed to be a black IPA, tasted too sweet/rich/malty and was more like a slightly thinner imperial stout. This is a good thing, as I like stouts and hate Black IPAs. Would definitely drink again.

Black pour with minimal head. Very roast aroma with notes of chocolate and grain. Nice mix of hoppy profile with chocolate and coffee. In no way like an IPA. More of a great American porter. Yummy. Medium body with a lingering finish.

Thanks to Blazer06 for sharing this one. Pours dark brown with a white head. Nose is coffee, some roast, spices, and bitter citrus. Flavor is similar with roast and coffee mixed with spicy citrus hops. Light to medium-bodied and enjoyable overall.

Best Jailhouse yet. It seems to be more like a stout than an IPA, although there is a definite hop taste. . Dark pour with a frothy, brown head. Flavor is a creamy chocolate and mild roasted nuts with some hop bitterness.

Thick & black with a tan pillowy head. Nose is smoky tobacco with chocolate notes. Semi-sweet chocolate taste, with a lactic feel on the palate. This beer is good, but tastes more like a stout than an IPA-no hoppiness at all.

Bottle... Farewell to ibrew2or3... Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, light khaki head. Good retention. The nose is roasty and a bit smoky; burnt and leathery. Full-bodied with a mildly creamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. The flavor is burnt, bitter and carbonaceous with afterthoughts of lightly sweet molasses and dark syrup. Finishes singed, bitter and lightly dry. Bottle courtesy of Blazer06!

Sample at a tasting at Suttree’s. Pours reddish black with mauve head. The aroma is super chocolatey with an anise note, some vanilla, and some wood. The flavor is chocolatey with wood tones, nice and boozy, especially in the finish. Ample bitterness. Not bad, but given how chocolatey it is, perhaps they should have called it a strong porter. But whatever.

Heavy and chocolatey - more like a hoppy porter than a black IPA, but I may be splitting hairs here. Anyway, I got a lot of chocolate and a lot of hops. Kind of one dimensional, bu still tasty.

Glad to see some great things coming out of Hampton, GA! This one pours pitch black with a nice brown head. Great lacing. Not as thick and oily as ten fidy, but looks like it has a nice body to it. Aroma is beautifully balanced with floral and pine notes representing the hops and a strong fresh baked bread presence coming through for the malts. Tastes great, too! Bread and chocolate come through first with just a hint of roastiness, accompanied by a nice creamy mouthfeel. Quite sweet. Then the bitterness of the hops come in with pine and grapefruit leading the way. The bitterness lingers a bit in the finish but the sweetness cuts that out quickly. Leaves a bit of alcohol warmth but hides most of it’s 10%. All around a very good beer. Not sure if I’d call this a black IPA, but it’s damn tasty.
