Growler- Thanks Mike- Dark deep brown, some head. Growler is about 2 weeks old. Nose is gentle, some smoke and some roast malts. Drinking is easy, great breakfast beer, some smoke in the backround, sweet roasted flavors up front.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BBB63 (5039) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - OCT 10, 2007
Tap: Deep brown with some head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of smoke and roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, herbal and citric hops, and some toast. The taste starts with a nice chocolate and toasted malt character supported by some ripe plum and coffee bitterness. The finish is smoky and earthy with a touch of resiny hop. The mouth feel is smooth and dry, chalky and a tad thin. With better mouth feel and depth this would be very good, still quite drinkable and worth a try.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Styles (2014) - Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA - SEP 30, 2007
Growler courtesy of Pailhead. Very dark brown almost black, minimal head. Big choclate aroma up front, fades to smoke and pine resin. No coffee detectable whatsoever, (this is a good thing for me)! Flavor much the same. Choclate up front, not quite as strong as aroma suggests. Some roasted/burnt grain and just enough smoke to register. Lingering pine aftertaste. Silky smooth palate and mouthfeel. Very well done.

Growler: Aroma of moderate smoke, chocolate, and faint roasted coffee. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small beige/brown head that quickly fades to a ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate and roasted malt. There is some faint coffee in the background. It finishes with moderate bitter burnt, smoke, and pine flavors with a hint of wood. Medium bodied with mild carbonation. A solid smoked porter.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAY 30, 2007
On tap at the brewery. Opaque medium brown body, medium cream head. Light chocolatey, roasty aroma (but served too cold). Light sweet body, lactic, with notes of milk chocolate, coffee, and dry roast. Light peaty notes add a salty, leathery characteristic to the beer. Good complexity, but slightly astringent and a bit rough on the palate.

Draft at brewpub. Poured dark brown color with an average brown frothy head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted sweet malty with a light smoke aroma. Medium body with a creamy texture. Medium sweet flavor with a medium bitter finish of moderate duration. Good drinkable porter.
