UPDATED: MAY 2, 2010 750mL bottle, purchased at Bottle Barn, entirely on cquiroga’s mention of it in a recent saison thread. Pours a slightly hazy, orange-copper color; foamy, medium--bubbled, off-white head with excellent retention and lacing that sticks; highly effervescent, with the bubbles from below keeping up the thick head; gorgeous pour. There are American saisons that show a great balance of a lively mineral bitterness, a clean, slightly toasty maltiness, and a charismatic yeast character, but almost none of them dig in as deeply to a funky, cheesy, musty saison character as this beer does: the malt presentation suggests caramel, Belgian sugar, and a touch of breadiness, alongside a zesty mineral hoppiness with notes of lime; solid levels of funkiness, musty notes, almost an oxidized malt note that blends well next to everything else; lively, zesty, funky aroma. A medium body; significantly creamy, non-astringent, no alcohol showing; excellent presentation in the mouth, with lively carbonation; definitely an effervescent feel; medium malt character of light caramel, biscuity notes, and (again) Belgian sugar; zesty, juicy citrus and mineral hop bitterness; the yeast character, as it should, affects everything about this beer; funky and lightly cheese, with a touch of white pepper and moderate acidity; in all honest, the prominent malt presence pushes this in the direction of a biere de garde, for me; non-negligible caramel touches, some Belgian sugar-like sweetness and heft; lovely complexity from the yeast. Just an awesome, honest rendition. I love Saison de Lente, but this is nothing, absolutely nothing like that beer; gotta love the variable nature of this style. Lengthy finish of musty notes, hints of biscuity malts (approaching caramel, again), and a lively, zesty mineral note. Thanks, Chris!

750 ml bottle from Bieropholie, shared with Phil, served cold in a Pils flute. 25AP10.

App.: Very cloudy orange-golden with an off-white froth. Aroma: Peppery, spicy, some nice citrus, dusty, yeast and wet bread dough, some funk, minerals. Palate: Medium body, lively effervescence. Flav.: Way maltier than the nose! Nutty, dried fruits, caramel, some vanilla notes, toffee, some yeast, citrus, slightly peppery, a touch of funk; dry with decent bitterness and a slightly malty and funky finish.

Quite interesting.

Serving: 750 ml. bottle from State Line. Pours a hazy gold with hints orange and no head at all. My first sip reveals this brew to be completely flat. The nose is a mix of yeast, straw, grass, and a little funk. The taste is off with a slight vegetal sour note mixed with hay, yeast, and dust. Light mouthfeel leads to an odd vegetal finish. My guess is that this one went bad somewhere along the line. A definite retry is in order given the higher ratings this one typically gets.

Draught at ZBF 2010. Cloudy dark golden with creamy head. Rich aroma, we have spicy yeast as well as a hoppiness reminiscent of the American style. I sensed a lot of citric, rubbery balloon hops in the flavour, and don’t feel it’s so much of a Saison. Also the flavour profile seems very clean. Richly hopped as said with high bitterness. Medium bodied.

Shared this w/ SkyCop32. Pours a hazy orangish/gold color. Aromas of tart fruit, bread, citrus, and yeasty. Flavor is malty/citrus. Leaves a yeasty orange aftertaste. Like a mellow smooth IPA. Good Beer!

Bottle. Hazy orange gold with an off-white foam. Aromas are very yeasty and woody with spiced oranges and some lemon. Flavours are oranges and yeast with soft but sophisticated spiciness. Has a smooth malty body with warming alcohol on the finish. Good.
