eduardovl (999) - SWITZERLAND - OCT 14, 2014
750ml bottle served in a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a beautiful dark color. Clear. Forms a thick, solid and creamy beige head. Good persistence and some spotty lacings left in the glass S: Sweet nose. Strong notes of caramel. Red fruits. Spicy too: notes of honey, black pepper. Flowery hops and Belgian yeasts in the end T: Follows the nose: sweet and fruity. Strong notes of caramel and crystal malts. Notes of honey, black pepper and red fruits. Flowery hops. In overall, a sweet, malty, peppery and watery taste. Mild hops bitterness in the very end. A bit metallic too M: Light, watery and slightly molasses body. Medium to low carbonation. Caramel and pepper as aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Quite close to an amber ale, in fact. Too mild spiciness to a Saison but still a pleasant beer [ BA Review @ 8/27/2013 ]

ForlornHope (145) - Hampshire, ENGLAND - AUG 17, 2014
75 CL bottle decanted into jug. Pours with a massive head that quickly dies to a flat drink. Beefy aroma. Once it clears, it is a semi-opaque ambree. Taste is again beefy, bitter and dry. Thin palate. Overall I was expecting much better from this over-hyped beer. Perhaps I had a bad one, but that’s all it takes. I will not be seeking this one out again.

Nice reddish colour. Very much spices in the aroma. The taste is also spicy. Dry finish with little bitterness. Missing some complexity in the flavour.

UPDATED: JUN 30, 2014 Tap@ZBF 2014-ZA. Pleasant enough Belgian ale/saison crossover from tweaked saison specialists Jandrain-J. Both style currents seem to contradict each other here, though, with a pleasant fruitiness stopped short by dryness before it develops, adding chalk to pear/apple/tangerine or spiced caramel malts to saison citrus. Still on the fence, will revisit bottled. / Rerate bottled, 75cl bottle, merci! Much more an exotically hopped, luscious Spéciale belge than a "Belgian farmhouse ale", with very organic, richly fragrant amber malts and velvet yeast profile. Peach, caramel, earthy. Pretty straightforward for its 7% but good.
