Pour is hazed chestnut amber with a then skin of a light brown head...smell is toasty and malty and sweet with some light hints o’ funk...taste is sweet and malty with some earth fruits and light fruity flavors...very full mouthfeel and tight carbonation...sticky finish and slightly cloying...

Deep golden color with beige head. Nose of fresh (American) hops, flowers. Exotic fruit. Taste: gentle hops, some trades of malts and yeast, but very well in balance. Fruity. Some sugarish candy in the back. Subdued carbonation. Bitter finish, subtile. Well made beer, very enjoyable.

Alengrin (2425) - BELGIUM - OCT 28, 2014
Spiced ale since 2009 with thin, off-white head over a deep bronze beer with burgundy hue, cloudy. Aroma of raisins, cider, walnuts, nutmeg, tomato, brown sugar; fruity onset (red apple), sweetish but more dry than the sweetly perfumed aroma suggests, probably due to spices, bittering in the end with nutty malts and slight coffee-like roasted bitterness. Interesting, a hybrid between a saison and a Scotch, or better put: an interesting, idiosyncratic Belgian. This brewery keeps surprising me.

750ml bottle served in a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a beautiful dark color. Clear. Forms a thick, solid and creamy beige head. Good persistence and some spotty lacings left in the glass S: Sweet nose. Strong notes of caramel. Red fruits. Spicy too: notes of honey, black pepper. Flowery hops and Belgian yeasts in the end T: Follows the nose: sweet and fruity. Strong notes of caramel and crystal malts. Notes of honey, black pepper and red fruits. Flowery hops. In overall, a sweet, malty, peppery and watery taste. Mild hops bitterness in the very end. A bit metallic too M: Light, watery and slightly molasses body. Medium to low carbonation. Caramel and pepper as aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Quite close to an amber ale, in fact. Too mild spiciness to a Saison but still a pleasant beer [ BA Review @ 8/27/2013 ]

75 CL bottle decanted into jug. Pours with a massive head that quickly dies to a flat drink. Beefy aroma. Once it clears, it is a semi-opaque ambree. Taste is again beefy, bitter and dry. Thin palate. Overall I was expecting much better from this over-hyped beer. Perhaps I had a bad one, but that’s all it takes. I will not be seeking this one out again.
