1.8 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 sinkas (234) - Perth/Fremantle, AUSTRALIA - JUL 15, 2007
Sampled from bottle at WABA Beer dinner, Applecross, WA
Unfortunaly the expectation of a mice pommy style bitter was not rewarded, this example seemed all over the place with some stale fishy flavours, and an unpleasant woody, harsh hop flavour and bitterness.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 ALLOVATE (1719) - Butler, WA, AUSTRALIA - APR 21, 2006
The commercial description is half right, it’s definitely sessionable like a good pub bitter but I thought it actually lacked in crystal malt for flavour. Looks the part; big ’smurf-hat’ off-white crown that raised a good ½" from the stein and left rings down the glass, atop a clear, fiery copper body. Generous, toffee, zesty marmalade and grapefruit nose with a light touch of wood. Rather dry in the mouth, woody, earthy (Marris otter?) and smooth on the palate. Mouthfeel is good yet the flavour is a little too subtle, possibly level with the light ABV. Spicy, herbal hops are quite prominent, especially in the back end where it is bitter on the swallow. Finish is dry, piney, earthy and herbal with good length. It’s overall nicely balanced and good of style but a little too thin. I’d like to see them ramp it up for an ESB to really beef up the flavour. Easy drinking. (33cL, no date, Int’l Beer Shop, W. Leederville)
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 mullet (849) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JAN 14, 2006
Nice English malt aroma like their Pale Ale - toffee, marmalade, Earl Grey, beef stock, tobacco. Meaty like Durham Evensong. Doesn’t taste as interesting as it smells. Seems like there’s a bit of dark malt in there, but it doesn’t look like it. Nice and soft feel, quite minerally, not much malt, mildly bitter with some peppery hop. Not that memorable.
2 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 DuffMan (4429) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 21, 2005
Poured from the bottle: maple-brown with a moderate tan head. Aroma of canned ham. I swear to God, this beer smelled like processed meat (I confirmed this with TylerDurden). Rather thin palate with some roasted malt character and a bitter resinous finish, but after a while the smell made tis fairly unenjoyable. I would like to try this on tap and see if it improves, as the other two raters seemed to like it a lot.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bells (4) - AUSTRALIA - DEC 13, 2005 does not count
Tried from the bottle, lovely toasted grain aroma with resinous and spruce like hop note, smokey undertones. held a great off-white frothy head above the slightly cloudy (bottle conditioned) red amber beer. as expected for this style it had a real earthy bitterness right through to the end, and a nice thick creamy almost oily texture. Lovely!
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 bluevegie (2932) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - NOV 14, 2005
On tap at the brewery. Clear light tawny brown body with a fairly average head. Very pleasant soft hop bitterness just shading out the caramel notes. Toffee and toasted notes on the aroma then softening to caramel.
Bottled. Head lasted a lot better and left good lacing. Grapefruit bitterness is still there but with some soapy notes.
