COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The name is, of course, a play on words from the well known German wheat beer called Hefeweizen. Although this beer is indeed a golden ale and not a wheat beer; we just couldn’t resist the humor in it. This rich ale is golden in color. It has a light bodied mouth feel, a residual malty aroma and a noticeable fruity character. This brew is truly unique in every regard. It is hand crafted from six different malts and three different hops, and a special strain of yeast for a smooth, sweet, fruity finish.

Clear, still and maize-colored. Tart and sharp with a good malt character and slight bittering. Good light ale.

Had this beer on 3/27/2001. Aroma is a sweet malt scent. Color a slightly hazy gold with good carbonation and head. Taste smooth and sweet. Starting with a medium body it goes down smooth with a sweet feel. Finish is a dry malt flavor.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2007 Jarre Creek Ranch Brewing is in my own backyard and I never knew it until my grandfather passed a bottle of this along to me. It took awhile to get past the idea that this beer was coming out of a cow’s urinary tract thanks to the handy graphic printed on the label. I now understand why I never really paid any attention to the fact that a brewer had snuck up on me in the last few years. If their publicity is muted, so is their beer’s flavor. Their Heffer Wizzen ale pours with absolutely no head, save for a few white, fizzy lily pads of carbonation. The golden ale is darker than gold, more of a well ripened pumpkin orange, and well clouded, suggesting a deeply flavored beer within. A tinge of honey wafts from the glass, along with sweet blood orange and hops, which is then acutely polished by a heavy alcohol vapor. A stinging smell of cleaning chemicals also tags along, ruining the synchronization the other aromas so carefully built and leaving me a bit more hesitant to give it a drink. My caution is affirmed when the taste mirrors the smell. The very slight honey flavor returns, this time paired with corn syrup and bustling carbonation. The vigorous bubbles might be a little overwhelming, but they at least contribute to the suppression of the cleaner agent taste which has nearly disappeared, leaving this Golden Ale a very simple, very light and very boring ale, but not as repugnant as I had expected. Still, too bare for my tastes, but could be a good teaching tool to a Hefeweizen neophyte. Now if only they could get a new label artist.

Bottle. Pours lightly cloudy deep gold with a small foamy white head and some lined lacing, some retention. Aroma is malt (hay, straw), yeast (dough, grass, earth) and light flowers, sour fruit nose. Mildly sweet malt and yeast flavor, flowers and fruity, mild acidity with no bitterness. Light bodied, creamy palate, very refreshing light ale.

Bottle. Pours a somewhat darker yellow without much head. Nose is lightly scented with, yeast. Flavor is thin, sweet with some malt. Not great, but not offensive. Got this one from Artic Liquors and didn’t realize it had been retired till I got here. Anyway, no loss on this retirement.

Why is this not a hefe, but the name suggests it is? Yellow. Overly sweet taste, with some funky earthiness. Finish is sweet and bitter.
