Cask@The Pembury Tavern, Hackney. Fairly straightforward bitter, with some subtle roasted malt characters, and some slight sourness. The mouthfeel is quite thin, and the flavour short, a bit below average.

Tasted this at the Three Judges, Glasgow in September 2004. Cask, handpump dispense. Dark ruby in colour with a thick creamy buff head. Strong roast grain and wood smoke in the long aroma. Thick creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a moist maltloaf base with thick molasses and roast grain flavours. These fade to give strong redcurrant fruit notes full in the mouth. Spicy dry hops give a tart bitter aftertaste which compliments the malt well. Finish is dry with crushed bramble seeds drying the mouth, the end smacks of malt though. An excellent Old Ale and highly recommended.

From cask at Three Judges. Pours clear and golden amber to deep brown with a small, dense and off-white head. Aroma is roasted malty, breadish and dark toffee. Bitter and roasted malt finish. Medium sweet and bitter.

Cask@The New Wheatsheaf, London. Deep rubyish amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is caramel, strange fruityness as well as some berryish notes. Flavour is quite much the same along with some slight toasted notes as well as some liquorice. Ending in a rather bitter way.

Dark red beer with looser that normal head for a Jarrow beer. Nose reminded me of a porter with nice roasty malt and a subtle smokiness. Thinner in the mouth than expected with a dried fruit character and some malt followed by a slight hop bitterness.

A Mes rate: Dark red brown looks with a very bubbly head. Sweet fruity and a little bit on the earthy and aged side. Slight smoked character too. Balance is reasonable, beer is standard.

Cask handpull at Pembury Tavern March BF 2007. Very dark brown/red colour with beige bubbly head. Dry malt aroma. Fine malty beer in mouth, some juicy raisin. Fuzzy hop on end tingles the tongue. Fine. OK premium bitter.

UPDATED: SEP 2, 2007 cask @ 2nd pembury festival. Soapy head, ruby amber in colour. Nose of nuts and caramel. Taste of marmite, hops, nuts, brown sugar. Light bitter finish with warming alcohol. Pretty good.

A thick beer. It had a syrup-like consistency, an oak constitution, and the hops, they were bitter. That said, it was a nicely balanced beer, I’d like to see it again.
