COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego homebrewing duo Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard submitted their Cherry Chocolate Stout for this year’s Stone March Madness Homebrew Competition and AHA Rally, taking top honors out of 40 entries that were judged. As a result, they earned the opportunity to make a dramatically scaled up version with Brewmaster Mitch Steele on the 120-barrel Stone Brewing Co. system.Once the beer was decided on, an additional brewer had to be selected to complete the collaboration. Deciding to bring in John Trogner, Head Brewer of Pennsylvania’s famed Tröegs Brewing Co.

pours near black with dark brown cap. smells wonderful...immediately hit with a mix of tart cherry (which comes out more as the beer opens up), dark cocoa, roasted malt, and a bit of vanilla. little hop presence, but the beer does taste bitter from the cocoa...there’s lots of it. silky smooth feel at 7+%. the flavor pulls off a delicate blend of sweet, roasty, tart, and decadent, without being thick or cloying. very sessionable for the type of beer this is. vwey well done!"

12oz bottle - Interesting beer and I really did enjoy it, but I have to say that I had higher expectations about this beer. It was lacking in both chocolate and cherry, but both present, in a beer from Stone and Troegs collaboration. Aroma had a light blend of cherry ice cream, coffee creamer, coffee and lightly roasted. Flavor had more of a showing of the cherry and chocolate, but all very restrained. Light roasted malts and alcohol is showing along with the chocolate and cherry. I’ve had beers with more of a cherry character and I’ve had beers with more chocolate character. A great idea that didn’t quite knock it out of the park here.

Black body; head recedes quickly. Pungent aroma of medicinal cherries seeps from the bottle. A bit ashy as well (initially), though this fades as it warms.

Deeply roasted, a little smokey, Tussin-inspired cherries, and dark chocolate on the palate. Reminds me of the similar Bells offering. And, like that one, I'm simply not a fan.

Transfer from BA - Poured from bottle into snifter. Appearance - A nice black color forming a thin head which gave way to some nice lacing. Smell - Roasted coffee stands out to me. There is some chocolate notes as well as a bit of cherry and dried fruits. Taste - The taste is a bit confusing to me. There is some nice roasted coffee and chocolate flavors, but the cherry and a bit of alcohol and vanilla flavor comes in and don’t really meld well with the aforementioned. It is a little messy in taste capabilities. Mouthfeel - A little over carbonated for the style, but a nice turbid feel to be expected for a stout. Overall - I was a little disappointed as I am a fan of stouts, Troegs and Stones and so it seemed like it would have to have been good combo. Unfortunately the tastes didn’t come together quite right.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light cherry with limited residual sugars notes and some black chocolate is really interesting. Taste is also a very nice mix of light cherry notes with some good black chocolate notes with a lightly sweet finish. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation. Quite enjoyable overall but I was expecting a bit more cherry notes to this beer.

Bottle at Vail. Thanks to adnielsen for sharing. Pours a black color with tan head. Chocolate, roasty, fruity aromas. Cherry, chocolate, roasty flavors. This one has a little age on it.

Old bottle I though is never try broken out by Ryan. Black pour medium body for a stout. Probably what I would expect 7% to be. Surprised how mug cherry was in there still. Tart and sweet. Soft chocolate and some dark malt under. Cherries were fresh not fake or forced. Good stuff.

Cherry aroma; inky black appearance with a frothy tan head; toasted dark chocolate and light cherry taste; initial fizz on the palate with a creamy and bitter finish; overall, a very good porter with a unique cherry undertones

Cellared bottle poured into a tulip. Pours black with medium head. Nose is malt, roast, chocolate, faint cherry. Taste is cherry up front, with chocolate, wood. Mildly bitter finish.
