On nitro draught at the brewpub in Ishpeming, Northern Michigan. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with a creamy beige head that stays with the beers throughout. Aroma of is very faint with some toasted dark malt, vanilla and a touch of coffee. Taste is medium bodied, creamy texture from the nitro charge with a very faint flavor of toasted dark malt and some light chocolate. Finish is light a touch of vanilla then a clean cut aftertaste with no flavor.

2008 MiBGF: Opaque with an excellent creamy beige head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of grassy hops, roasted and chocolate malt, walnut, raisins and some coffee. The taste is lactic and fruity with a nutty and chocolate background, rather simple and straight forward palate. The mouth feel is smooth and soft. Starts nice but in the end is just an okay beer.

On tap at the brewpub. Noses in light coffee and coconut liqueur. Pours a deep black-mahogany, with a really intense mocha head, staying. This is really sweet, but surprisingly complex tasting. I hate the sweetness, but love the blend of nuts, caramelized sugars, vanilla, bourbon, and roast that comes through. For that is complex. And actually, some of the Guinness-like thinness helps fight off the hazelnut-syrup sweetness. In the end, I’m a little confused by this beer. The sweetness hurts, but the malt character isn’t bad. If this was an Imperial, people would be drooling all over it, but the watery lack of carbonation hurts a little.

On tap at the restaurant/brewpub. Deep opaque brown body, tan nitro head. Light chocolate aroma with moderate sweetness, backed by roast. Strong chocolate body with a fairly strong caramely characteristic, light sweetness. Subdued bitter finish. Smooth but something seems to be missing. Perhaps a bit too much caramel confuses the palate.

On tap at the brewpub, Ishpeming MI. This and the Red Earth Pale Ale were the pick of the beers here for me. Good dark brown/red, almost black, appearance with a persistent mushroom coloured head. Roasty aroma, with plenty of mocha notes. More coffee comes through on the palate. Smooth mouthfeel, but a little residual sweetness lowers the score a notch for me. A decent, tasty stout nonetheless.

Sampled this beer at the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison WI. Even though my scores on this are accurate and well researched, Da Man wants me to say more about the beer, so I will. Bla, a somewhat crappy stout. Not impressed at all.

from a growler--seems a little flat, perhaps because of the growler. smells smoky and roasty with some dark chocolate in there somewhere. taste is very roasted and earthy, plenty of woody coffee in there too. finishes slightly bitter, but aside from being a little thin this is a good stout.
