2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 islay (623) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUN 21, 2009
750 mL bottle. Metallic, yeasty, slightly nutty aroma features cookie and green grape scents. Pours a hazy light amber with some bubbling and a large amount of thick, uneven, beige head. Produces good lacing. Cool wisps of "smoke" came out of the bottle when I opened it. Metallic, fruity, simplistic, malty, excessively sweet taste. Carob, butterscotch, and watermelon flavors. Dull, unpleasant aftertaste. Light to medium body. Soft in the palate.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 unclemike (1363) - Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA - JUN 10, 2009
Pours deep amber/mahogony with good head and retention. Aromas are floral, fruity, with striong spices, and some hopping.Flavours are strong spices, almost curry-ish and dark fruity hops bitterness. Lots of sugars in the finish, with nice lingering spicy pumpkin-seed bitterness. A strange BDG, but a nice one
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 maltdog (587) - Pueblo, Colorado, USA - MAY 12, 2009
25.4 ounce bottle with a short cork stamped "A-07". Coppery orange, wispy head. In order of intensity, smells of toffee, acrid hot circuit board, rust, blueberry, feet. Soft and sugary flavor, sweet-salty, leafy, and hinting at honeysuckle nectar. Plummy-orangey finish, bitter gallberry honey and wet wool aftertaste. Sweetness partly augments the light palate. Very little carbonation. Even without its failings, this would be an uninteresting beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Muggus69 (854) - Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA - MAY 7, 2009
750ml corked bottle. BB 25/10/???3...2013 possibly? Damaged label :-(
Served moderately chilled in Duvel glass.
Very nicely presented beer. Thick sort of offwhite head atop a mid-amber body with a tinge of haze.
Quite a grainy malt aroma. Nutty, burnt caramel, spicy rye bread, liquorice, mild charcoal roastiness leading onto a bit pepper and clove, subtle dark fruits.
Sticky malt texture, soft moderate to low carbonation, full body that doesn’t allude to a high abv. Slight drying grain astrigency, but in good balance.
Quite a malt-driven body. Sweet toffee and nutty malt, bit of bready yeast in there. Undertones of orange, vanilla and spice on the body. Finishes with a touch of liquorice, drying moderate bitterness, and a small indication of the alcohol.
Not an overly complex beer, but nicely flavoured and somewhat intriguing its subtle character.
