Publican (16), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Jan 19, 2004 My first Biere de Garde. Hazy orange appearnce with a fruity aroma and hint of alcohol with similar taste and a fleeting aftertaste brewbear (48), 3096 Oberbalm, Switzerland Jan 15, 2004 Nice amber!!!! Smooth, fruity, malty flavour with nice hoppy bitterness, a bit too much pasteurized (stewed hops in the finish). CEZ (369), Milano, Italy Jan 9, 2004 A fellow ratebeerian whose name I've forgotten (sorry) had once told me that sushi tastes better with a biere de garde instead of the usual japanese dry lager... and well, he was damn right! Deep red body, medium head, mostly lasting. Rather wide range of flavour encompassing spices, orange (it may be the season, but I keep detecting orange flavours in all my beers these days!), and a somewhat rusty aroma. Strongly hoppy but balanced overall. Dry finish. Very nice, original and drinkable. This one has to be the first french brew that I really liked. chriso (4685), London, Greater London, England Jan 5, 2004 Amber biere de garde. 750 ml bottle with champagne style cork. Lively fizz. Nice dark amber appearance. Malty nose. Some balancing bite on the palate. Quite full bodied. Soft finish. Bottled, France, December 2003
Crit (2399), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Nov 26, 2003 Amber with off white head.Lightly fruity malt nose.Rich malt flavor with light alcohol overtones. Full bodied and creamy. Spiesy (2333), Global Citizen, Greater London, England Nov 24, 2003 Updated: Feb 4, 2004 Bottled. Amber coloured beer with strong toffee aromas. Fairly sweet and sticky. Certainly a winters beer, just fit for tonight. Re-rated, 1 Feb 04: Thought it was slightly better the second time around. MaBeer1972 (421), Leominster, Massachusetts, USA Nov 21, 2003 I am highly impressed. Deep amber hue with nice foamy head, but not unruly that I had to wait to sip it. Wonderful smooth and buttery mouthfeel. The flavor is balanced between the malts with a bit of tartness on the backside. I just can't believe how incredibly smooth this one is! PorterPounder (3133), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Oct 22, 2003 First I have had of this style and I like it. Has a sweet toffee-like aroma with a nice off white head with good lacing. Color is a light amber. Flavor has some licorice qualities to it with some caramel undertones - very pleasing in my opinion. Goes down extremely well, rolls off the tongue. Best French beer I have had.
