PJClarke (609), London, Greater London, England Nov 27, 2008 Red-amber with a very short lived nicotine yellow head. It smells quite boozy with wafts of caramel malts. Quite sweet and fruity with a rounded caramel flavour. Something of plums and dates in it as well. Very smooth, quite oily and well-carbonated. A little sterile or chemically tasting like a dentists or a lab of some kind but drinkable none the less. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Nov 18, 2008 750 ml bottle. Sweet floral aromas. Flavors were similar with some spice and hints of light fruitiness. Just average really weaselkenievil (738), Cheshire, England Oct 10, 2008 Bottle from some supermarket in Bergerac, France. Poured a fizzy looking reddish amber with next to no head. Remained fizzy but the head went very quickly. After the shite poured down my neck the last couple of days this should have been like finding a human woman on the planet of the apes...but it wasn’t unfortunately. Bland and uninteresting. Better than many French beers in my humble opinion, but still pretty blah blah. Bah humbug. gam (1059), brisbane, Australia Sep 7, 2008 Amber colour thin head, lets say all over retention is not strong.Aroma caramel honey, malt.Flavour honey malt caramel, peanut note or hazelnut.Has a fair lasting taste but nothing tops. goozen (1061), Leiden, Netherlands Sep 6, 2008 Tap at Cafe Studio, Haarlem: Amber coloured Biere de Garde-style brew, and this is the easiest one to drink in this style. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA Sep 2, 2008 I’ve read about this one for quite awhile as being one of the oldest producers of this style. Naturally, I was very interested as being a fan of the production methods involved.
Poured a beautiful deep copper head. Biscuit aroma with bits of old hops. Flavour is sticky-sweet with bits of funk and an odd aftertaste of hay. Quite a bit of earthiness to it, but it seems out of balance with the sweet character of the malt being too forward. A little complexity behind the malt backbone. The more I had of this the more it became a chore to finish the bottle as the sweet candied corn nature of this became a bit too much in the end. Wasn’t expecting much, but I at least was thinking it’d be much drier than it was. Disappointing. Allen (1282), Switzerland Aug 28, 2008 Updated: Dec 23, 2008Bottled 75cl. It pours a copper beer with a creamy off white head. Nice lacework. The nose is of malt, straw, white pepper, caramel, candy, a huge amount of figs, wood, pineapple and manure. Slightly sour. Sweet taste balanced by a good bitterness. Dominating figs, raisins and hay with white pepper, home made caramel, sour apples, pineapple, candied fruits and wood showing up. Medium bodied. Very drinkable. Perfectly balanced. Sourish. Some honey and peaches showing up in the finish which is rather dry. Extremely complex. Additional comment after a few samplings: Honeyish nose with huge amounts of raisins in the taste. Malty.
