Cask: Regular.
A distinctively darker bitter brewed with malt made from Maris Otter barley and the careful addition of amber malt, to give a nutty flavour that supports a subtle blend of English aromatic hops.

Cask: Deep golden, smaller white fluffy head; "woody" hops and a vinous fruitiness in the nose, a bit "corky", too; dryish bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; the same flavours dominate the dry bitter-sweet flavours. O.K., nothing to complain.....

Cask at the Green Lodge, Hoylake. A dark brown affair with a mid sized creamy tan head. Not much in the nose. Malt predominating throughout the flavour with some vague dark fruit lurking. Pretty uninspiring. Not especially offensive, just tedious.

Cask, various. A middling session bitter, with a reasonable amount of body for a low ABV. Malty dominance, almost prickly at times, with roast malt fairly easy to pick out.

Cask @ GBBF 2009. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a slightly roasteed malty caramel aroma. Fruity malty caramel flavor with some weak hoppy hints. Has a fruity malty caramel finish with some bitterness in the aftertaste.

Cask at GBBF 2009 ... copper ... light hop nose ... dull fruity hop ... musty and boring.

Cask at the Cross Keys, Thixendale, N Yorks. Fairly dark chestnut, nice nutty, malty, caramel flavour with limited hoppiness. Good session bitter.

Cask at GBBF 2009. Dark brown colour with a thin white head. Plenty of malt in the aroma, the taste is all malt, with a very strange bitter taste. This gets the nomination for the worse beer of the week at the festival.

Cask conditioned handpump Roscoe’s Head, Liverpool. An amber coloured beer with a whitish head. The aroma has malt and candied fruit but then an unpleasant vinegariness takes hold. The vinegar happens first in the mouth but then becomes less obvious and there’s some fruit. Quite a let down though.

Cask at various locations. Not a favourite. So lacking in hop character that it resembles a Scottish beer. Overly sweet and malty, it needs an astringent quality for balance. If it’s all that’s available as a real ale I switch to lagers, it’s that dull.

Cask, The Old Red Lion Hotel, Market Bosworth. Chestnut and lacy. Vague walnutty malt, liquorice, varnishy nut bitterness and caramel. A splash of gravy. OK, but tedious.
