UPDATED: DEC 22, 2008 A Mes rate: bottle from god knows where. Not too sure about the aroma. Notes of b.o. which obviously is never good. Lovely dark brown colour with a very well behaved head for what it is. Flavour is roasted malt but nothing more really. Standard stuff.

Brown 500ml bottle best before Nov 2007, drank March 2007. Poured into a sleeve pint glass. Mahogany brown with a red Teak hue, good sparkle to it. Off white head, clings to glass side and stays. Toffee and burnt malts converge to give a heavy bitter sweet aroma. Dry and fairly bitter taste, with the burnt flavour of the malts taking over from the toffee in the aroma. Watery mouthfeel, some bitterness stays otherwise very poor. I have had this in cask form and thought it a very good beer, this bottle version is OK, but I prefer the cask.

Rating from an old notebook. Bottle. Reddish coloured ale with a thick off white head. Fruity malt aroma. Full flavoured sweet and fruity best bitter with few hops.

23rd October 2008. Clear red brown beer with a light cream coloured head. Light fruity start - a little malty nuttyness. Semi dry finish which has a hop bitterness that blooms but doesn’t overwhelm. Crisp.

Dark red-brown colour. Aroma of roasted malts. Flavour is rather bitterbut has enough complexity of malt and hop to carry it off. Overall a nice bitter with a good malt flavour.

Nice looking pint, aroma malty and fruity. flavour malty and moderately bitter with a little smokiness. palate a little overcarbonated which is not good for the mouthfeel unfortunately. finish dry and woody, lingers pleasantly.

Ethereal (2399) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JUN 10, 2007
500ml bottle. Pours a clear, reddish amber with a perfect inch of head. Really looks like the archetypal pint of bitter when poured. Unfortunately, it doesn’t taste as good as it looks. It lacks aroma and the malty taste has a chemical tartness to it. The palate is a bit weak and the aftertaste is shortlived. Overall, distinctly average but gets a bonus point for the looks!

Gethinbeer (1565) - Musky, Nova Scotia, CANADA - MAR 23, 2007
Rich aroma with hops and yeast. Deep reddish brown in colour, off white crispy head. Oak flavoured bitter with a crisp tangy feel. Tangy, bordering metallic finish. Nice beer but didn’t like the finish.

rauchbier (3205) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - FEB 19, 2007
Bottle. Bronze, moderate lasting off white head and gentle condition. Delicate roasted malt and a faint smokiness in the nose, low sweet malt and gentle metallic hoppiness in the mouth and a slightly chalky dry bitterness in the finish.
