(bottle) Clear, dark brown colour with a reddish shine and a firm medium-sized tanned foamy head. Roasty malty aroma with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and leather, accompanied by a tinge of dried fruits. Moderately roasty bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Roast-malty taste with caramel, coffee, chocolate, nuts and subtle fruity notes; roasty and slightly hop bitter finish with an aromatic tail of coffee/mocha and chocolate. Good hybrid beer. 15.V.12

Dark ruby with a brown look and a thin white head. Smells of a proper old ale. Like a spirit and a malt beer. Light roast. Frothy smooth medium body. Taste of dark roast malt, dark berry, chestnut and caramel. Smooth but seems like its missing something. A little bland.

500ml brown bottle, best before Aug 07, drank Jan 07. Very dark for a strong bitter, deep mahogany red, held up to the light, you can see it is clear and clean as well. My head turned wispy within one sip and a half. The beer was poured fairly cold, into a straight pint sleeve, but even as it warmed up my nose had trouble picking up any strong aromas. Sour toffee apples, caramel and burnt malts when almost at room temp. I have visited the brewery and tasted this in its cask form both at the brewery and in a few pubs around the UK, the bottled version is not as good, but still gets a 3.5 score because it is very pleasant. Deep malty flavour, leaning towards Porters and Stouts, but with a lighter, fresher, cleaner, less creamy mouthfeel and texture. A good bottled beer, better on cask, but worth trying if unable to take the cask conditioned version.

from Neuchâtel Maladière (a temporary english shop in front of the Coop) - dark brown beer with a little foam left; very toasted biscuity maltiness with notes of caramel underneath; a good malt backbone and a solid earthiness; dry and bitter earthy malty finish - lot of character

Pours rich amber with a frothy head, nice lacing down the glass with soft carbonation. The aroma is rich caramelly with some toast and light roast, hints of alcohol, acetaldehyde and aromatic hop. The flavour profile shows lovely fruity/estery characters some intitial sweetness followed by long slightly astringent and pleasantly bitter finish.
