Sept, 2002 This is all about that dark, licorice malt. [3.9 ]
May, 2003 New Road Inn, Blackpool. I was very keen on trying out a Jennings pub during the Blackpool Rocks weekend. The New Road Inn was quite a walk because we approached it from the wrong end of the Talbot Road. The pub looked attractive from the outside, like a stone built manor house, but the inside was a rather faded art deco. The Sneck Lifter was very tasty. Big fruit rush with smooth licorice followed by dusty fragrant hops which finish a bit flat, leaning toward cardboard. Finished 3rd in the Blackpool Rocks weekend. [3.6]
Oct, 2007 JDW, Rochester Sampled as part of the JDW Fest - I love getting three 1/3 pint glasses with three different beers. I had had the pasteurised version of this the night before, so I still had a memory of it. This, of course, didn’t have the harsh, forced carbonation. It didn’t have the caramel pop aroma/flavour - though it did have burnt toffee and fireworks night cinder. A pleasant malty sweetness with a more assertive and fresher hop bite - dark and serious. This really hangs together well and is a contender for a classic ale. It is related to the pasteurised bottle, but is no way the same quality or character. [4.4]
July, 2011 JDW, Rochester. Good malty brew with burnt raisins, tree bark, chocolate and fruit cake. Hints of curry on the nose. A totally yummy and compelling brew. Total classic. [4.2]
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 kiwianer (830) - Mönchengladbach, GERMANY - MAY 31, 2012
The colour is dark red. The taste is hoppy, creamy, a bit flowery-sweet, salty and it just has a bit CO². For me it could be more roasty and in some parts it is to mild. => Ok 10/8/8/8/-/8

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 wheresthepath (1087) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - MAR 23, 2012
[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading] Chestnut with a moderate, creamy head. Wood, chocolate and coffee with a light bitterness. Mellow, indulgent and tasty, this is a lovely beer… but oddly it’s still not a patch on the bottled version.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 worldbeertaste (628) - Lancashire, ENGLAND - FEB 16, 2012
Dark ruby with a brown look and a thin white head. Smells of a proper old ale. Like a spirit and a malt beer. Light roast. Frothy smooth medium body. Taste of dark roast malt, dark berry, chestnut and caramel. Smooth but seems like its missing something. A little bland.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 1, 2012
First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in May 1991. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear mahogany in colour with a thick creamy off white head. Strong malty aroma with sweet treacle toffee notes long in intensity. Thick creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts give a robust maltloaf base with molasses and prunes soaked in syrup. Good hop presence with a earthy, wet leaves and bread notes in the aftertaste. Finish is malty and robust with sweet maple syrup and walnut notes. An excellent Old Ale and worth seeking out in cask. Superb stuff.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Dr_Butty (63) - SCOTLAND - JAN 27, 2012
A pint that depends upon where you have it, but it’s always good at The Bank Tavern, Keswick. Dark, not quite opaque, fairly flat with a tight, small head. Roasty malt aroma and then distinct coffeeish flavour and balanced bitterness. Good brew for winter evenings

Brilliant beer. I love the cross-over feel of it - part traditional strong, part porter. Lots of flavour, rich and quite malty. Lovely creamy head.
