3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 DYCSoccer17 (2787) - Woodland, California, USA - APR 13, 2007
22 ounce bottle purchased from the Davis, CA Food Co-Op. Aroma is lively, attractive, quite roasted, with a lot of coffee present in the nose. There are also some light metallic notes here, as well. All in all, this has a very quaffable aroma. Very minor transparency, with an otherwise deep mahogany colored body and a disappointing false, quickly dissipating tan head. Quite roasty, burnt, choco-coffee flavors to start, with a light sweetness in the middle. Some astringency is also there in the middle. Finishes a bit metallic. This is actually well-made. The other 2 beers I had from these guys was something to be desired, but this is a very well-done stout. It uses just enough black malt without going overboard. It’s a shame that the carbonation is false and there is a lack of a head, but this is still impressive for a country with a beer pedigree such as Argentina.

600 ml bottle poured a translucent black with a large lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, bakers cocoa and hints of licorice, smoke and vanilla.Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of dark chocolae, roasted malt, light licorice and vanilla and a hint of smoke with a crisp lingering bittersweet finish.

JEROME NEGRA IS A DARK, COMPLEX
YET EXTREMELY DRINKABLE ALE.
SIMILAR TO A STOUT, THIS HAS
A BLACK COLOR, A THICK, DARK
CREAMY HEAD AND EXUDES DARK
CHOCOLATE AND ESPRESSO FLAVORS. IT FINISHES SMOOTH AND
IS REFRESHING WITHOUT
BEING TOO HEAVY OR
FILLING. EXCELLENT!
Jerome is named for the family dog, who was a well-known German Shepard in the very little mountain town of El Salto, which is on the edge of a
glacier-feed spring high in the Andes.
These beers are painstakingly made with only the finest of national
ingredients. The barley malt comes from the famous Argentine grasslands
know as the “Pampas”, the cascade hops come from Patagonia, outside
Bariloche. The beers have also been certified by the “Slow Foods” international group for their quality and pure origin
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 NYHarvey (2153) - New York, New York, USA - DEC 31, 2006
660ml bottle from Liquid Solutions. My first Argentinian beer is a stout. That makes me happy and makes me want to visit Argentina all the more. The aroma is quite roasty, but also has some tart notes to it that get slightly sulpuric...reminds me a little of a match head as far as an aroma comparison. The body is deep black and holds a fluffy, but still bubbly, thumb thick mocha head that is mostly diminishing.
<P>
Fore is lightly smokey, heavily roasted and tart with some mild esspresso notes and faint hints of dark chocolate. The tongue is dry and coats the tongue in a fine film. This could be pretty good if not for that off tart flavor which heavily distrcts from the base underlying roasty flavors that are quite nice.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 bhensonb (7592) - Woodland, California, USA - DEC 8, 2006
Aroma of chocolate and toasted malt. Opaque brown/black color and a head that quickly disipated. Tastes something like original Guiness - really toasted, smoky malt, with chocolate that comes and goes. Pretty dry, and a nice bitterness to balance the non-sweetness? Pretty nice mouthfeel - starts medium, then thins out. Very good.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 probstblueribbon (1974) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 30, 2006
12. fl. oz. bottle shared with Lubiere (merci Luc!). App.: dark cola brown, yeast flakes in strong light and a reasonable light-mocha head. Flav.: dark, dirty, briney (olives), dark-roasted malts, fruit and concord grape juice. Palate: med.-full body and med., slightly tingly carbonation. Flav.: chocolate, raisins, concord grapes, a touch of sweetness. Slightly alcoholic finish, some copper (not a good thing). Leaves minimal bitterness and a red wine, slightly yeasty aftertaste (a couple of minutes after swallowing). A little woody too. Certainly interesting!!
3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 mobster07 (18) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 17, 2006
Chocolate, roast and a little sweetness in the aroma. Opaque black with a very small diminishing head (unfortunate). Flavor was pretty good with roasty malt and some chocolate, a hint of bitterness, some citrus notes, and as it warms some smokes sneaks in there. The body was refreshingly light but it was astringent. Overall a somewhat drinkable hybrid stout/porter IMHO.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Panzerfaust (509) - Hanga Roa, Easter Island, CHILE - NOV 3, 2006
Pours an opaque, pitch black color. Small light brown head. It dissapears fast and leaves a medium lacing.
Aroma is full of coffee grains, very malty, burnt with espresso notes. There is also some smokey, roasted traces. I think I’m smelling a strong, bold cup of Arabica coffee.
Flavor is as the aroma, very coffee-ish, with some espresso, mokka and capuccino. Sweet subtleties but bitter overall. Pretty nice.
Body is medium, texture is watery. Low carbonation. Chalky finish. This is a good but sadly unbalanced stout.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 BeerandBlues2 (6127) - Lone Tree, Colorado, USA - OCT 9, 2006
Bottle. Pours opaque with a medium sized foamy, fizzy brown head, mostly diminishing. Aroma is heavy roasted chocolate malt (straw, hay, meal), sour yeast (sweat) and woodsy ashy notes. Medium sweetness to start, caramel and chocolate roasted malt with notes of coffee and wood, sour slightly bitter yeast, mild acidity. Medium to full bodied, fizzy and foamy mouthfeel, ends a tad dry. I was impressed with this beer given the region it comes from. A little overkill on the roasted malts and the carbonation is a bit too much for a stout.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Ernest (5187) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - SEP 3, 2006
UPDATED: SEP 4, 2006 Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy/fizzy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is absolutely opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (husks, burnt grain, stale coffee), with notes of ashes and tar.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, husky.
Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
This will probably get reasonably good ratings from the majority, as it has enough dark malts to help cover up the problems. Roasted to hell and back, with all the grain husks left in, but it certainly is the best of the three I’ve had so far from this brewer. Almost drinkable. They do get props for achieving opacity, though.
