CaptainCougar (4624), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 2, 2007 Pours a slightly oily black with a nicely-lacing frothy dark tan head. Aroma of slightly earthy semi-sweet dark caramel and chocolate malts with a faint touch of diacetyl. Body starts slightly sweet and caramely with a hint of butterscotch complexity and lingering dark chocolate in the finish. A nice stout. BückDich (4525), Boise, Idaho, USA May 22, 2007 Bottle: Dark color, nice tan head and superb lacing. The nose is very roasty and smoky with a sweet charbroiled note. Like some coffee rubbed pork spring rolls or something. The flavor is a bit more intense with a nice mineraly mouthfeel to accent the roast and sweet underlying malts that are obvious underhopped for a reason. Trying to eek out that nutty sweet quality like guinness maybe? Their water is made for it. Maybe that’s why their lager sucked balls. Head is initially average sized, frothy/fizzy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is absolutely opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (husks, burnt grain, stale coffee), with notes of ashes and tar.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, husky.
Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
This will probably get reasonably good ratings from the majority, as it has enough dark malts to help cover up the problems. Roasted to hell and back, with all the grain husks left in, but it certainly is the best of the three I’ve had so far from this brewer. Almost drinkable. They do get props for achieving opacity, though. Lubiere (3184), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jul 6, 2008 A dark almost opaque brown ale with a thick bubbly light moka head. In aroma, bitter chocolate with briney olive notes, and nice coffee finale. In mouth, a good torrefied malt with light vinous notes, but the finale is like sucking on pennies, coppery. Tasted in late nov. 2006.
