Dark, dark, dark, dark, thick looking brown fluid resting quietly in this unassuming glass, webs of bubbles are strung across the surface as if waiting to ensnarl an unsuspecting passerby in its net of mystery. Heavy better coffee rises from the surface of the black fluid filling the nose with memories of first dates and early morning jogs that help awaken your senses for the experience to soon come, notable alcohol is also there to greet you but it has nothing to say except I am your friend enjoy my company. When the fluid blankets your tongue for the time you want to say thank you sir for dumping you ash tray into my coffee. The brew is bitter, more bitter as the coldest winter night but somehow a lonely sweet fruit can extend its hand towards you to be touch and enjoyed. The intensity of this black poem rivals that of any great passionate love story too big to handle, to fantastic to turn away.

22 ounce bottle (labeled Andean Stout). Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch tan head that stayed around for a while. There’s also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and sweet, the brew smells like dark fruit (raisins, prunes), molasses, chocolate, coffee and some charred/burnt malt. The flavors are the same as the aroma, but not quite as strong. I do like the taste, but it does seem a little weak in comparison to the aroma. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a little bit coating with moderate carbonation. Overall it’s a decent enough brew, I’d buy it again in the future. It’s certainly worth trying for just $3.99 a bottle!

This is a good smooth dark Irish style ale. Smooth molasis malts with a a soy sauce aroma

Bottle:   Black, large light brown head, nice lacing.   Nice roasted malt nose, some lactose like sweetness.   Fairly roasty on the tongue, start to finish.   Not a big malt base, very little hop which is welcomed.   Slight ash on the backside.   Moderate to thin body and mouthfeel.   More astray on the finish.   Simple, but straight forward and respectable.

660mL bomber thing from Cleveland Park Liquors. The pour is a deep brown with no head formation. Scant, weak, large bubbles form and subside. Nose is salty black olives. Taste is olive juice, astringent bitterness, salt, chlorine, pool cleaner. Non existent palate. Drainpour. Needs a new brewer probably.

poured dark and dirty into glass, light brown head with little lacing left behind, a malty sweeter stout than I am used to, a medium body and carbonation, takes a bit of getting used to.

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2011 Bottle from World Market. Opaque black-brown pour with a brown head leaving sparse lace. Chocolate, licorice, coffee, cherries and dates flesh out the aromas from this surprisingly light-medium bodied stout. There is a tartness early and in the finish and then a metallic aftertaste as if I bit my lip. With the medium carbonation and relatively light body, the mouth feel is lacking. Interestingly, this stout is sweet and sour early, transitioning to umami and sour at the finish, with minimal bitterness throughout. I thought this could be a nice sessionable sweet stout, but the metallic aftertaste ruins that idea. I’d try it again, but would like to have it closer to the source.

Older bottle never opened from Thomas. Pours thin. Slight cola and chocolate flavor. Carbonation fades. Not too impressive.

Macarthur’s Beverage 660ml (I love weird South American sizes) ($4): Pours a black body with a brown head. Aroma is of really roasted malts, along with some fruitiness and some other things. Taste is really smoky, but the balance is pretty off. The malts are all right, but they are not well-balanced. The body is a little bit off as well. Still, it is pleasant to drink, if not exactly pulled off exactly right.
