Hints of strawberries and spice in the aroma. Amber in color with no head (again disappointing). Slight hint of clove and pepper up front, followed by a strawberry type sweetness. Thin body. As a easy drinking summer session beer I think it is very drinkable beer. Nothing really complex about it but thats ok in my opinion.

pours caramel brown with a good sized dissipating head, beautiful and bountiful CO2 streams, micro carbonation with thin top retention, sticky lacing all around. Faint dark malts and caramel on the nose. Excellent buttery soft smooth mouthfeel, 6/10 bittersweet caramel up front, traces of cinnamon spice, a bit of malts and bitter hops, medium off-dry hopped lingering bitter finish. Low-medium complexity, medium depth, medium length, medium-high body. All-around good beer, but nothing terribly wow in the now.

Bottle:   Deep amber, slight sediment, moderate sudsy off-white head, decent lacing.   Malty nose, a little sweet, some barnish like character.   Smells decent enough.   Good body, malty, not heavy, a little spritzy, hint of sourness that seems to counteract the sweet maltiness.   Reminds me of of Mt Tam Pale Ale, yet with lower hops and more malt.   I am enjoying this more than I thought I would.   Slight belgian fruity like character on the backside, becomes a little thin in body, bubbles die quickly.   Hint of metallic items after the finish.   Overall, not bad... better than expected.

Old paper review from summer 2009. Good bright brownish red, clear beer, tan head, smooth cap, ropy slippery lacing. Rich roast and caramel aroma, dark fruit, very rich and tons of pungent aroma. Faceless hop taste, but they are noticeable. Caramel, bitterness doesnít quite work but itís ok. Need much more flavour. Slight zip, ok smoothness, plain bitter finish.

Poured dark read with a foamy tan head and moderate lacing. Sour nose. Medium body and a fizzy carbonated mouthfeel. The flavor contains sour fruit and sticky caramel malts. The finish is quite sour and maybe this is from he belgian yeast. Overall a bit of a mess. Not one I would buy again.

poured into glass colour was reddish brown, slight offwhite head, malty sweet aroma, not much hop, carbonation did aide the mouthfeel a little, but again these beers need a little more hop.

Bottle @ home. Ruby red appearance with a red/cream appearance. Big sweet amber malty flavor. Kind of a thin bodied amber and somewhat sour. Kinda sucks.

660 mL bottle, $5 @ HyVee, Storm Lake, IA. Batch R138: This may be the only batch to be imported to the States, I bet. Guess I was taken in by the label calling it "Belgium Style," meaning what? Their web site tells of the founder learning brewing in Czechoslovakia. And by the idea of an imported beer totally sourced in its country of origin. Their web site only mentions aging in wine barrels. Lot of yeast in the bottom, so Iím pouring slowly to see a cloudy amber beer with some champagne effervescence. Smell shows a little sourness from either brett or wine barrel. Opinions on this one are all over. Iím just going to say itís "different." Very bubbly, slightly cheesy, and with some wine and cider notes. Hops are there in a bit of citrus tartness, as is some amber malt. Some of this may be because itís an old bottle, I spot the same batch on a rating from January 2009. A strong sparkling brut impression builds at the end. Gotta say itís more like some of the old, overwarmed bottles of Casteel Iíve had. Current taste may not be what the brewer intended, but I find it interesting. At least itís not some headache inducing crappy Minhas malt liquor. Besides, itís brewery way up in the frigginí snow-capped Andes, closer to Santiago Chile than anywhere else (Google Map 32į57í21"S,69į17í54"W to see). Thereís a place Iíve got to visit for a beer!

Batch R138; Sampled August 2010
A soft pour into my 25cl glass fills with four-fingers of lightly amber tinged foam quite quickly. The beer is a deep red color that shows a brilliantly clear, dark copper / red color when held up to the light. This is definitely aggressively carbonated too, as there are a ton of madly rushing bubbles in this beer. The aroma smells quite fruity as I pop the cap; a closer inspection yields notes of grapefruit, berries and a back drop malt character that seems heavy on the caramelized crystal malts. There is a mustiness to the nose that I canít quite seem to place.

Sweet tasting and frothy up front, much of the sweetness comes from a crystal malt like character and the froth comes from the exited carbonation. The malt character tastes a bit oxidized, though not heavily so, but it tastes like it has some age on it. Fruit flavors of berries, a touch of raisins and some citrusy, grapefruit notes (these last from hops) are noticeable. The malt character is a touch musty, like it was in the aroma, but more so it tastes of biscuit like malt, lightly caramelized whole grain bread crust, and even some grain like spiciness (though perhaps that is yeast influenced). The body on this brew is about medium for a beer of this strength; it definitely has some texture and viscosity to it, though it remains fairly drinkable.

A bit of a let down, not a horrible beer for sure, but it doesnít seem to have a whole lot going on. It says Belgium (sic) style on the label, but there really doesnít seem to be a whole lot of yeast character here.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty caramel aroma. Sweetish malty caramel flavor with some weak tart hints. Has a sweetish malty caramel finish with some weak sour hints in the aftertaste. Slighlty infected
