3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml split between 3 of us.
A - Pours a heavy metal black, with 2 fingers of espresso frappa head. Rounded patterns of vertical lacing.
S - Rich and roasted black malts, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, berry fruit, allspice, nutmeg, unknown spice.
T - Dense and creamy chocolate, almost astringent, heavy roast, acidic coffee, raspberries, star anise, charred vanilla, spicy hops. The Belgian yeast is present but mellow.
M - Moderate carbonation cuts through the density lifting the body creating a super creamy feel and light/medium body
Black metal is a good name for this brew. The Belgian yeast takes a back seat to the full on stout components. Lots of chocolate and roast. Light feel for such a big brew.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at the parentals with my dad. Pour is deep, viscous black with a big frothy brown head - good lacing. Roasty, chocolate, earthy, leathery, ash, leathery, tangy, grapey, and coffee in the aroma. Taste is rich dark chocolate, woody, leather, smoky, espresso, light vanilla, earthy, dark fruits, black licorice, and tangy with a long roasted chocolate finish. Syrupy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Not as good as the original, but tasty nonetheless.

Trade from Errl. Pours super viscous and thick with deep coffee crema colored head. Nose of burnt malts, coffee, molassess, dark things. Chewy mouthfeel, tar, burnt malt and coffee. Definitely different than my recollection of the original. There is a short, but distinct sourness before the long finish like acetic red fruit. Interesting twist. Good beer for a snowy night like this one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Opaque black color, small brown head. A bit woody, toasted-roasted aroma, maybe some milky notes too. Full-bodied. Milky, roasted, kind of shorty finish. Not much farmhouse found.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Big dark roasted scents that are entangled with a dried fruit funk. The beer is so dark it appears black but the big active heads purple tint makes me think otherwise. It’s flavor has a Tartness like you might find in a Saison, The thick caramelized sweetness that you find in scotch ale, the roasted dry coal coffee of a stout and a wood barrel tint. It is a lot to comprehend take your time and sip slow.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750ml bottle from Cask n’Flask, San Jose, CA. Pours filthy, burgundy-edged obsidian (impenetrable in the glass) with a decadent grey-khaki coloured mousse. Huge cocoa, mocha, cinder toffee and dark leathery prune aroma with yeasty backnotes more Marmite than farmhouse. Fine, bittersweet, punchy imperial profile not shy on the roasted front; notes of bitter chocolate, sweet cocoa, peanut M+Ms, ash-flicked espresso with red apple and sourish heartburn undercurrents firmly ensconced in the Belgian camp. Prickling carbonation losing some head as it warms. Bovril-like, slightly salty Baltic streaks beneath the chocolate and acidity. Tasty but for me neglects any stout’s most essential ingredient- drinkability.

This really works for me. Pours pitch black with an initial huge frothy beige head, no lacing. Nose is some espresso, some fruit. Notes of espresso, bitter chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit and a decent amount of tart notes in the finish. Taste is medium sweet, med/light bitter and light sour. Medium body with a pretty dry finish. Very drinkable and dare I say "refreshing" for a 9pct stout?!

Nice look - foamy and black. Aroma is yeasty and mild funk. Taste is very carbonation heavy - farmhouse style comes in afterwards. Decent stout, but nothing to get too excited about.
