Black Metal Imperial Stout, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte. Black Metal is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. We are pretty sure that Kreator wrote the song “Impossible Brutality” about this beer while drinking it during their Extreme Aggression Tour.

Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

750ml bottle thanks to Errl! Pours brown-black with thin tan head. Nose is musty dark coffee, fruity booze, soil. Taste is smooth, dark fruit, dark bitter chocolate and coffee, warmth. Finish is bitter dusty roast wet coffee, bitter chocolate syrup, notes of fruitiness, touch boozy and just a hair on the thin side.

This is really good stuff. Maybe I am a sucker for the farmhouse interpretations of styles, but I think this stands up. Pours a awesome bubbly black with a nice foamy dark head. The taste is superb with notes of chocolate roasted malts. Huge flavors of espresso and ice coffee to round it out. Dry finish with the classic saison yeast taste.

750ml Bottle - Black with a tan head. Plain chocolate, dried fruit, coffee and salmiakki in the aroma. Chocolatey and roasted taste with plain chocolate, liquorice, vanilla and coffee detected. Rich and luxurious, yet very easy to drink.

Popping open this bottle while listening to Dimmu Borgir & Black Dhalia Murder =] Aroma brings heavy notes of chocolate, black malts, toffee, espresso and literally roasted grains. Thick motor oil black appearance with a nice mocha colored foam and intense lacing against the glass. Very, very carbonated flavors of dark chocolate, fudge brownie, coffee beans, oily molasses and funky toffee. As it sits, the carbonation fades a bit. Alcohol is well masked and the finish is a smooth chocolate with a warmth from the alcohol. Overall, this is a really nice black ale. First i’ve had from this brewery, will definitely be purchasing more from these guys. A- rating.
