Black Metal Imperial Stout, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte. Black Metal is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. We are pretty sure that Kreator wrote the song “Impossible Brutality” about this beer while drinking it during their Extreme Aggression Tour.

Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

Huge flavors of fresh roasted coffee, and bittersweet chocolate. A nice rich full body with a unique finish, I really enjoyed this stout.

Aroma burnt coffee, appearance is pitch black with dark brown head, taste is burnt coffee, leather, molasses, and a little sour funk. Very unique and flavorful stout.

Popping open this bottle while listening to Dimmu Borgir & Black Dhalia Murder =] Aroma brings heavy notes of chocolate, black malts, toffee, espresso and literally roasted grains. Thick motor oil black appearance with a nice mocha colored foam and intense lacing against the glass. Very, very carbonated flavors of dark chocolate, fudge brownie, coffee beans, oily molasses and funky toffee. As it sits, the carbonation fades a bit. Alcohol is well masked and the finish is a smooth chocolate with a warmth from the alcohol. Overall, this is a really nice black ale. First i’ve had from this brewery, will definitely be purchasing more from these guys. A- rating.

Too bad this version isn’t available anymore. I had this when it first came out and thought it great. While trying it again, this bottle obviously had age on it but held up very well. Strong roasted malt aroma with some coffee. Very black with a big brown fizzy head. It had a medium-weight palate with good carbonation. Flavors were toasted grains, coffee and burnt toffee. Alcohol was covered pretty well. I’ll miss this one.

From a bottle. Aroma is full of dark chocolate, light toast, light leather and tobacco and moderate fruit esters. Fruit is raisin, prune and fig with a faint plum note. Really nicely balanced aroma. Faint soy sauce oxidation. Pours black with a fairly thick mocha head that shoes good retention but does steadily recede leaving a thin film on top and along the edges. No lading but fairly long legs. Flavor is similar to aroma, but perhaps a bit more fruity and the alcohol is more noticeable. Moderate roast character with supporting leather and tobacco notes. Lighter amounts of dark chocolate. Moderate raisin, prune and fig. A hint of earthy, woodsy hops and moderate bitterness. Moderate alcohol heat in the finish. Some dark chocolate in the finish along with a bit of an ashy character. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium high carbonation. Low to medium low astringency, likely from all the dark malt, and medium alcohol warmth. Overall an alright beer, with the aroma being better than the flavor. The flavor is just too ashy with a bit too much astringency. The carbonation is a bit high as well.

Awesome bottle label! Thick and dark like the head-banging, mosh-pitting black death metal it derives its name from. Pretty Good.

Sour. Farmhouse imperial stout. Wow what a beer. Huge and intriguing. The sourness comes through but is balanced by the grain bill. Thanks for this to Butler.
