Black Metal Imperial Stout, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte. Black Metal is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. We are pretty sure that Kreator wrote the song “Impossible Brutality” about this beer while drinking it during their Extreme Aggression Tour.

Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

Sour. Farmhouse imperial stout. Wow what a beer. Huge and intriguing. The sourness comes through but is balanced by the grain bill. Thanks for this to Butler.

Bottled. More or less pitch black colour with a beigeish brown head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, ashes, some ripe dark fruits as well as mild liquorice. Flavour is very dark chocolate, some coffee, mild nuttiness as well as some ashes, ripe fruits, alcohol and some hints of liquorice. Smooth to drink and although big, not all too thick.

750ml bottle. Pours a motor oil black color with one finger of dense, dark brown head. Sweet aroma with a hint of roasted coffee and a lot of dark chocolate. Taste has lots of cocoa flavors. Rich and deep, but not overbearing. A hint of dark fruit, licorice, and roasted coffee rounds out the flavor.Full-bodied, thick, and syrupy with moderate smooth carbonation.

Reviewing a year old aged bottle Pours a half inch dark chocolate head, body is pitch black in color. Head retention and lacing were above average. Smell is of sweet port wine, chocolate, and roasted coffee beans. Smell of alcohol is slightly present and malt is abit smoky. Hops arent apparent at all. Taste is of sweet chocolate syrup, slight soy sauce too. Burnt malts and roasted espresso mixed with some port wine balance the beer out. Hops arent present and alcohol cuts some of the sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied but is lighter than it looks. Head dissipated rather quickly unfortunately, beer was well carbonated. Overall this beer was a good imperial stout. Nothing in the top ten of its style but a solid brew nonetheless. Would drink again if available to me.

Bottle - thanks Nick! Thick dark black pour, tan head. Aroma is hugely chocolatey, roasty with dark fruits hiding in there. Coffee and dark fruit in the taste, chocolate, chalk, ash, coffee grounds. Full body, viscous, chalky texture average to high carbonation. Overall: an above average stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
