Black Metal Imperial Stout, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte. Black Metal is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. We are pretty sure that Kreator wrote the song “Impossible Brutality” about this beer while drinking it during their Extreme Aggression Tour.

Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

Batch 1 bottle at Strangeways. Pours pitch black with a khaki head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is the same with a slight bitterness. Great carb on the mouthfeel without diluting the flavors. Delicious beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Really cool bottle that raises expectations. I loved the aroma of figs and coffee. Unfortunately i didn’t find the taste quite as good. Got some espresso and spruce. Good taste but not fantastic. Good over all though.

Bottle. Pours black with a creamy medium light brown head. Aroma is raisin, licorice, very hard roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruit, tar, caramel and smoke. Taste is moderate sweet and bitter. Body is medium+, texture is smooth, carbonation is moderate. Finishes light sweet, smooth and long with chocolate.

Bottle with a friend at my small apartment. Pours black with cream grey head. Aroma is roasted toasted malt, smooth light thin notes with and edge of burnt. Taste is nice caramel roasted malt, soft, lacto, very smooth and drinkable in the mild direction of an irish dry stout. Shame they stopped making this.

Bottle from Piggly Wiggly Homewood. Pours black with a thick brown head. Doesn’t leave much lacing in the glass. Fairly big malty notes on the nose. Massive chocolate on the tongue. Smooth, rich mouthfeel. Hides its alcohol well and is a pretty clean finisher. Awesome stuff!

Bottle. The taste seems undeveloped wich leads to a perfumed feeling. Heavy roasted. Too carbonated.

Thanks for sharing this one BG. Overly carbonated like the noir. Fizzy mouthfeel. Very dark roasty but has a touch of sweet at the end.

Bottle shared courtesy of JBPortland ! Pours a thick black with a finger of khaki foam. The nose is smooth creamy chocolate, a touch of roast and some caramel softness. The palate follows with a creamy mouthfeel and a very balanced chuggable palate. Soft chocolate almost milk stout like with a touch of roast coming forward on the late palate. Really easy drinking, focused and balanced.

750ml bottle thanks to Errl! Pours brown-black with thin tan head. Nose is musty dark coffee, fruity booze, soil. Taste is smooth, dark fruit, dark bitter chocolate and coffee, warmth. Finish is bitter dusty roast wet coffee, bitter chocolate syrup, notes of fruitiness, touch boozy and just a hair on the thin side.
