Boxer’s Revenge is inspired by the hearty “stock ales” or “provision ales” produced by some of iconic farmhouse breweries located along the Franco-Belgian border and named in honor of the stalwart workhorse in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. It combines delicate notes of tropical fruit, citrus and spice from the primary French farmhouse yeast with tart, rustic, earthy notes from the Brettanomyces. A final dry-hopping with fresh Cascade and Centennial hops adds yet another layer of depth and complexity.

Bottle at Patrick's with Taylor. Pours clear orange. Aroma is thin, slightly sour, pickles. Taste mild brown sour, acidic leather, wood. Finish is very long and acidic mild sour. Unbalanced on the sour side. Interesting brew

7 sept 2013, tap. Light orange and faintly cloudy. Nose is sour, woody, cobwebs. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Dry wood, perhaps some whisky notes, faint straw malt. Ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

My "favorite-ist" beer at JK thus far. The wine and whiskey barrel aging really did the trick on this. Kind of a red-orange hue, no head except some large pour bubbles. Aroma of bubble gum oranges and peach. Smooth mouthfeel, finishes very tart with barn yard grain flavors. Excellent.

750ml from Charleston Beer Exchange, Charleston. Moderately cloudy golden pour with fairly minimal carbonation and an occasionally oily look. Nose is initially somewhat sharp, from still redolent hops and the combined barrel filtered through brett. Mouthfeel just a trace acetic, and still comes across as a bit oily, could use more liveliness. Tastes are intermittently quite nice, with vinous tartness mixing with raw grass and grain somewhat pleasantly. But there are instances of slightly excess booze, taking over from the ripe fruit and grassiness that seem to work well elsewhere. Mostly it works, though, and it’s an interesting variation.

Loved this one. Reminded me quite a bit of the better Russian River sours. Murky amber. Little bit of whiskey, little bit of red wine. Caramel, citrus, funk, horse blanket, tropical fruits. Masks the abv beautifully. Just delicious.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2013 Got in a trade with Cyde. 750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours moderately hazy orange amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big orange zest, lemon zest, pear, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, clove, oak, floral, white wine, grass, pepper, bread, funk, light caramel, and spicy yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of hop, yeast, and barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big orange zest, lemon zest, pineapple, peach, pear, grapefruit, clove, oak, pepper, floral, white wine, grass, light caramel, herbal, funk, and spicy yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pear, pineapple, peach, clove, oak, pepper, white wine, floral, funk, and spicy yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of hop, yeast, and barrel flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with an acidic, moderately crisp, slick, and earthy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent wild ale! All around great balance and complexity of hop, barrel, and yeast/brett flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for being over 10%. A very enjoyable offering.

Two small tasting cups at Cotteridge Wine during the 6th July RB Black Country Bus Trip (sorry if I stole someones cup, but I needed two to rate/review it correctly). Dark yellow/orange body that was hazy: the head never really stood a chance with so many small cups to fill from each bottle. Lemon tree aroma and also in the taste: a bit more complicated than that but a ’Lemon tree’ has complex smells, esters and thoughts. A bit too sour for my palate but I know plenty of ’sour pussies’ who would love this. I’ve tried to score objectively.

Hugely complex nose, mild grassy tropical fruit mixing with more dominant hay and spicy Brett and brown sugar. Some light vanilla, woody caramel. First pour is clear and golden, small but lasting white head. Flavours of mandarin/orange citrus blending into woody Brett notes. Fairly light body but a lasting tart and light acidic finish still gives a substantial mouthfeel. Fantastic beer.

5 oz pour from June tasting at Doug’s. Aroma is all lemons and sweet tarts. Taste is mildly sweet but very tart. Too much for me really. The lemony, fruity, spicy taste is really good though so I still enjoyed the sample.
