English Imperial Stout meets the Franco-Belgian Farmhouse tradition in this dry, drinkable beer; Pitch black in color with notes of chocolate, roasted and black malts coupled with earthy, peppery and floral farmhouse esters.

Note: This Farmhouse version replaced the original Black Metal Imperial Stout when Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all beers. The original bottles feature a small Jester King sticker on the neck; newer bottles do not have this sticker and say "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

750 ml bottle, batch #15, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.3%, OG 1085, FG 1015, IBU 44. Pitch black colour (one of the darkest beers Iíve seen), large and impressive head with colour somewhere between coke grey and brown. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, leather and chocolate, mixed with acidic and "farmhouse" notes of brettanomyces. The flavour is rich and medium sweet, with some fruity acidity, but is first and foremost dominated by roasty notes of coffee, hints of dark bitter chocolate and black pepper. Great stuff.

Black pour with a big tan head. Dry roasty aromas with notes of coffee, cocoa, and farmhouse funk. Flavor is roasted malts with a dry funky earthy finish. Interesting brew with a lot going on. Not my favorite impy stout, but worth trying for sure.

First off as a huge metalhead this label and name kicks ass. Anyways, bottle via trade shared with hummm...I know someone. Pours out black with a dark brown head. Aroma is of syrup, chocolate, light roast, dark dried fruits, burnt grains. Taste is complex and a silky smooth borderline sexy mouth feel. Flavors of dark roasty malts,, chocolate, lit medium roast coffee, figs, light molasses, mildly funky yeast?

"Black metal" black color with a nice brown head. The nose is full of coffee, roasted malts and chocolate. Flavor is tart (light), caramel, smoked wood (?) and some coffee notes.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2014 My Bottom Line:
Superb dark chocolate flavors take hold of this unique take on the Imperial Stout style, as Saison yeast and discreet ashes rear their heads in the background.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam loudly fizzes away into the darkness.
-The prickly carbonation doesnít necessarily fit with the rich dark malts and their residual sugars.
-I donít really see how the farmhouse yeast helps this beautiful grain bill.
-The finish is pretty tame; lightly mineral, sweet and barely bitter.
-A 2-year-old bottle proved to be an IMMENSE improvement (which is rare). Farmhouse yeast took a back seat and barely added a touch of rusticity and acidity, leaving lots of room to the beerís gorgeous dark malt aromas and flavors. From 3.4 to 4.4, really? Donít remember the last time this happened to me.

Bottle at Crowbar. Black with a huge, light brown head. Salty caramel nose. In the mouth also hints of smoked flavours. Quite good, some Bambergian character.
