This beer is now retired. All bottles from Batch 16 onward should be rated under the new Farmhouse Black Metal entry as they are brewed using a wild yeast blend, not the French Saison yeast used in the original Farmhouse Black Metal.

English Imperial Stout meets the Franco-Belgian Farmhouse tradition in this dry, drinkable beer; Pitch black in color with notes of chocolate, roasted and black malts coupled with earthy, peppery and floral farmhouse esters.

Note: This Farmhouse version replaced the original Black Metal Imperial Stout when Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all beers. The original bottles feature a small Jester King sticker on the neck; newer bottles do not have this sticker and say "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2014 My Bottom Line:
Superb dark chocolate flavors take hold of this unique take on the Imperial Stout style, as Saison yeast and discreet ashes rear their heads in the background.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam loudly fizzes away into the darkness.
-The prickly carbonation doesn’t necessarily fit with the rich dark malts and their residual sugars.
-I don’t really see how the farmhouse yeast helps this beautiful grain bill.
-The finish is pretty tame; lightly mineral, sweet and barely bitter.
-A 2-year-old bottle proved to be an IMMENSE improvement (which is rare). Farmhouse yeast took a back seat and barely added a touch of rusticity and acidity, leaving lots of room to the beer’s gorgeous dark malt aromas and flavors. From 3.4 to 4.4, really? Don’t remember the last time this happened to me.

Bottle at Crowbar. Black with a huge, light brown head. Salty caramel nose. In the mouth also hints of smoked flavours. Quite good, some Bambergian character.

Dark opaque black with a tan head. Nice head with tight bubbles. Aroma is of milk chocolate , dark cherry , and coffe. Flavor is the same with some mild bitter and burnt toast. Great CO2. Slightly fruity & peppery. Great interpretation of Belgian Stout. ---Rated @ your Moms House.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, with a very large, brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee. Flavor is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, fruit, ash, and a slightly sour presence, but not in a bad way. Medium body, with a long, bitter finish.

Aroma: Smelling of dark bread, dark fruits, sugar, coffee and smoked oak.
Appearance: A dark black colored beer. A brown head with small lacing and good curtains.
Taste: Tasting black bread, grape-fruit peel, sweet coffee and salty licorice.
Palate: Medium low carbonation, a watery texture. A big body with a slightly dry finish.
Overall: A slightly salty sour licorice vibe. Not very funky.
Note: Bottle 750 ml at home. Reviewed 2014-02-21.

Bottle. Poured black with a low tan head. Aromas of malted chocolate and coffee. The malt is really nice and smooth dark chocolate. Earthy notes throughout.
