from Erzbierschof - dark reddish-black beer with a poor head retention; roasted malts, ashes and chocolate, some sourish cherry notes; full-bodied, moderate carbonation, a pretty assertive sourness; quite dry and hoppy with long cherry, earthy and chocolatey notes - very nice and original profile for a great astonishing beer

At my place with Taylor, Matt, and Jake. Batch 1, like 2 years old. Pour is dark dark brown black, small circle of head. Aroma is huge sour, like boxer revenge style sour, marshmallow malts. Taste is sour tart, coco nibs, tangy, lots of nutty notes. Not bad.

Small pour from a bottle at Hops & Pie. Black appearance with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark fruits, light chocolate, earthy and oak notes. Similar flavor, dark, malty, fruity, light tart and lightly sour. Medium body, a little flat.

Served in a Jester King goblet. Dark fruits and a bit too heavy on the roast. Underlying acidity and mild earth.

Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Nose and taste of chocolate, grape, sour funk, wild yeast and earthy malt. Medium body.

Sour, malt, chocolate, coffee bean. Well balanced. Not a great style but decent

HMOG 2014. Pretty sure this is what put JK on the map for me personally and glad I finally got to try it. Almost black, cherries, acidic. Close your eyes and the dark nature of the beer almost goes away into a really nice, medium bodied sour. Still the roasted nature is there and can’t take this sour to the top.

HMOG 2014. Interesting combo of flavors. The sour stays with you for a while but the stout floats in the background. Roasty bittersweet malt for the stout. Light fruit with a bit of wild brett for the sour. Medium on the brett/sourness scale.

Pours a warm coffee brown with a light buttery tan head. Aroma has strong notes of bourbon and sour fruit plus an undertone of roast coffee. Sour fruit and coffee dominate the edgy flavor, which has a woody bourbon undertone. Texture has average viscosity and good fizz, leaving a sour fruit finish. Definitely funky.

750ml bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, sourness and tart notes, some fruit notes, light chocolate and coffee, and light dough. Flavor the same with the dark malts and sourness blending well. Average texture. A cool beer, but maybe it’d be better if it were lighter.

5 ounce pour at the Jester King brewery. Black appearance, brown head, visible bubbles. Smells like bright coffee, sour, a little acidic, wood, semi sweetened chocolate, appealing and complex... lots of stuff in the nose to unpackage. Tastes like dark roasted oats, wood, barnyard wet hay, sour, baker's chocolate. Medium bodied mouthfeel, smooth. Overall a dynamic brew that has plenty of parts to pick apart and taste out. This is a fun beer to taste with friends and compare impressions on the flavor aspects. They meld the stout and sour characteristics nicely.
