Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. Our rendition of this ancient style is inspired by the traditional farmhouse ales once brewed on the island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden. Gotlandsdricka (6.6% alcohol by volume) is brewed with birchwood smoked malt, juniper and sweet gale. It’s unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated through re-fermentation in the bottle.

Bottle thanks to Sam! Hazy golden pour, small white head. Nose and flavor are crazy and rather awesome, with huge sour, smoke, and herbacious kick throughout. Beechwood a la rauchbier is certainly apparent, but not moreso than undeniable lactic funk. Ginny woody bite complements this bizarre but attractive quaff. I’m into it.

Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a shallow, creamy, fine-grained head. Nose is smoke, lemon, stone fruit, sea salt, and peeled green wood. On the tongue, it’s mostly smoke and sour; saline, herbal, some honeyed sweetness, a touch of fruit, and earthiness rounds it out. Creamy yet sharp on the palate, with a long, acetic finish. I don’t get much juniper, though there’s a ghost of it in the close. I don’t know if I can say good, but I’ll assuredly say fascinating.

Bomber. Thanks to mike12da. Bacony, smoky nose, a bit sourish with some stinky herbal notes, creosote, and tuna fish. Hazy apple juuice color. Sour fruit initial, moves to a sweet peachy flavor with some light spice, then some smoke and funk, and later celery and wheat. Thin-medium body. Wow! Very uusual and complex. Nice tartness, but not a pucker monster -- just very pleasant. Couldn’t drink this everday, but it is a special brew.

750 ml bottle. Deep, cloudy, glowing orange. Great nose: smoke, berries, grapefruit, lemonade. Very tangy, lightly sour, berries, bacon, salt. Nice blend of smoke and sour with a pretty strong bitterness as well. Complex and wacky, though it comes together very well.

From what I can gather, Gotlandsdricka is a Sahti/Smoked Beer/Gotlandsdricke/Farmhouse Ale-ish type beer. That random-ass description might explain why it tastes totally unlike anything I’ve tried. This ale smells like herbal juniper and acrid smoke. It tastes like a liquidized version of savory birch-smoked meat with spices. Jester King says this "may have been the beer of the Vikings." If that’s the case, I’m going to brush up on my Norse mythology and die a Viking’s death. Then, I can go to Valhalla. I’ll fight, chase Scandinavian maidens, eat in banquet halls, and drink this beer from the teats of Heiorun the goat. Yes, I think it’s safe to say that this beer has changed the entire trajectory of my (after)life.

(Thanks Dain "DrunkSanta410") Bottle. A- Bacon, ham, smoky, spices. A- Yellow orange color, cloudy liquid, white head. T- Ham brine, bacon, smoke, woody, spices. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, meaty finish. O- Finally got to try my first gotlandsricke. This was a full on meat beer. Not sure what junipers taste like so can’t comment how prominent they were in here but damn was it meaty. Tons of bacon, ham, and smoke on the nose and palate. Sounds gross but it was like drinking ham brine. By those descriptors I should really hate this beer but in fact I really liked it. Next time I get something like this I better be enjoying some bbq with it.

Bottle from rougeau13 - Thanks! Cloudy yellow, with a ring of foam. Smells like bread, juniper, flowers, and some biscuity notes. Thinnish body and insanely drinkable. Tart citrus, juniper, some smoke. More smokey flavors as it warms. Really good...

Bottle at James’ house for the End of History tasting. Pours a hazed gold with a thin white head. Spicy and herbal on the nose, a hint of smoke. Medium bodied, soft smoke, a bit of spiciness, yeast and a touch of herbs. Long slow smoke finish with a little bit of soft bitterness. Very tasty.

Pours light yellow with a fizzy white top. Aroma is smoked meat and sweet juniper berries. This beer is like a jekyll and hyde. I can have one sip and get roasty malts and smoked meat and a real rauch feel and then the next sip is light and farmy with sweet juniper berries and light wood. Very interesting and a great balance.
