3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
P: Pale straw body with a massive airy white head that has multiple honeycombs. Retention is decent and leaves no lacing due to the frailty of the head.
S: Smoldered wheat, semi farm funk yeast, pilsner malt, smoked birch wood, moss, oak barreling.
T/M: Flavor follows the nose but has more powerful smoked oak and herbs. Cardamom, coriander and salty tobacco. Tart white grapes give a profile similar to a smoked sparkling wine. Dry hay and bitter persimmon in the finish. Vivacious body.
O: Really easy drinking for the style. The smoke seems natural and complimenting not forced. Sometimes smoked beers are just plain hard to drink due to the massive smoke profile. This is not the case. This is about six months old so the smoke may have faded a bit but I like it.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A careful pour into my New Belgium globe glass still ends up filling my glass to the rim with foam, and then rising almost a full two fingers in height over the top. The beer is a rich gold color, and shows a mostly clear, pale yellow, gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma is an interesting mix of spices, smokiness and fruit character. From a distance it smells fruity and spicy, but a closer inspection is dominated by the smokiness. The smokiness doesnít not have the fullness nor savory quality that beechwood smoked malt has, but it isnít sharp, phenolic and overwhelming like peat smoked malt either; it adds a nice, softer, woody and smoky character to the nose without being overly sharp or phenolic. The has lots of berry like notes to it (perhaps even evocative of juniper berries); it reminds me of a small, dried, bluish berry of some sort that I canít quite put a name too. The spice character seems to lend an herbal edge to this beer, but it melds in with the smokiness so well that at times it can be hard to pick out.
Softly fruity and light tart up front, the middle and finish is dominated by the smokiness that lingers on the palate a bit like a saw-burned plank of wood; the smokiness is not so dominant in the flavor though that the other notes canít come through. The beer is quite light bodied, it is buoyed by the effervescent, prickly carbonation, and certainly isnít watery, but it is light and refreshing (assuming you are not turned off by smokiness, which I am not). That bright, berry like fruitiness from the aroma is also here in the flavor; it is joined by a hint of pear or ripe plum character, but really has a tart, almost , but not quite, dried blueberry note, perhaps a touch of mulberry even. The malt character plays a supporting role here, it adds a rounded, slightly cracker like, but more of a wholesomeness to the smokiness that dominates this beer.
An interesting beer; it gets extra points for its uniqueness, and I would love to try the real thing at its source, but I canít really say that the smokiness is balanced well with the other notes. Still this is far from bad, and I am actually enjoying this.

750 bottle. Bright light gold and hazy. Small white head. Nose is first smoke, then a bit of funk and yeast. Taste is backwards, with the yeast and funk first and then smoke at the end. Unique. Not a bit smoke fan but this is interesting.
