Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. Our rendition of this ancient style is inspired by the traditional farmhouse ales once brewed on the island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden. Gotlandsdricka (6.6% alcohol by volume) is brewed with birchwood smoked malt, juniper and sweet gale. It’s unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated through re-fermentation in the bottle.

bottle thanks to djd07. pours a hazy light yellow with a large white head, lots of tiny bubbles, about 1 inch. nose is slightly smokey and salty, chemical-like. initial taste is of slightly sweet malt, with a quick touch of smoke. a light, almost woody bitterness balances the malt. has a dry finish and is quite quenching. high carbonation with no astringency. overall, a very enjoyable beer. one of my favorite JKs so far!!!

Strange, sweet, and fresh. The juniper defines the beer but there is an understated smokiness to this as well. Excellent and very unique beer.

Bottle - my 75th style for my 1500th rating! Pours cloudy yellow with a large white creamy head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is smoky, grain, hay. Medium sweet, lightly bitter, juniper/sprucy notes present, along with smoke. Lightly astringent as well. Medium body. Interesting, but I am not tossing an ISO on the board to get another one.

750ml served in a Chimay goblet. A - Pours a very cloudy but glowing burnt orange. 2 fingers of white foamy head that sinks at a medium pace forming a cirrus cloud cap. S - Smoked wheat malt, beechwood, earthy and dust hay, smoked bananas, juniper, unknown spice. T - Follows the nose with delicate smoke, a good dose of pilesner malt, green and dried grassy flavors, the juniper is has a medicinal character and comes out mostly toward the finish. Dried banana, some acidic fruit around the edges of the tongue. The herbal character comes out more toward the end. It has a long and very dry smoky finish. M - Light side of full body with ample creamy carbonation. Has a nice lush feel with a dry finish. Apparently this (Gotlandsdricka) is it’s own style but it’s not listed yet on BA. Probably because it’s an ancient Viking ale that nobody makes anymore. It reminded my of a mix between a Gratzer and a rustic Hefeweizen. Very rustic and the smoke came out more as it warmed. Didn’t get as much of the juniper as I thought I would but maybe that’s a good thing. This would pair well with food. Serving type: bottle 10-19-2012

Location: 750 ml bottle from Central Market, 6/19/13

Aroma: The aroma is smoky and acidic, there’s some earthiness, and a bit of fruit as well
Appearance: It pours a cloudy golden color with a fizzy white head and drippy lace
Flavor: The taste is smoky and a hint tart, with a mild sweetness, and a light bitterness too
Palate: The body is medium, it has an overly fizzy carbonation, and a dry, smoky finish
Overall Impression: Another gushing Jester King beer from Central Market, this is starting to seem like a trend... Anyway, this beer is solid, but a little odd. The fizzy carbonation and odd flavors also hurt the drinkability and overall enjoyment of the beer.

750mL bottle. Really liked this beer. Pours a golden color. In a nutshell, the beer is beautifully smoked. Strong smoke in the aroma and flavor yet a great strong carbonation and light body. I would put it a step above the Aecht Schlenkerla Helles as light and easy drinking smoked beer. Clean and bright white bread malts. Has a farmhouse-y feel only in that the body is lighter and strong carbonation. But its awesome.

Clear light gold color with lasting white head. Spicy smoked meat, peat, berry fruit aromas. Light body with lively carbonation. Nice smoked spicy grains, berry fruit flavors with dry spices--drying finish---tasty ale.

P: Pale straw body with a massive airy white head that has multiple honeycombs. Retention is decent and leaves no lacing due to the frailty of the head. S: Smoldered wheat, semi farm funk yeast, pilsner malt, smoked birch wood, moss, oak barreling. T/M: Flavor follows the nose but has more powerful smoked oak and herbs. Cardamom, coriander and salty tobacco. Tart white grapes give a profile similar to a smoked sparkling wine. Dry hay and bitter persimmon in the finish. Vivacious body. O: Really easy drinking for the style. The smoke seems natural and complimenting not forced. Sometimes smoked beers are just plain hard to drink due to the massive smoke profile. This is not the case. This is about six months old so the smoke may have faded a bit but I like it.
