COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. Our rendition of this ancient style is inspired by the traditional farmhouse ales once brewed on the island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden. Gotlandsdricka (6.6% alcohol by volume) is brewed with birchwood smoked malt, juniper and sweet gale. It’s unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated through re-fermentation in the bottle.

Cask at Zwanze Day. Pours a hazy yellow with a stiff white head. The nose is meaty and a bit salty, fruity overall and with juniper notes. Soft malt notes, grainy. On tasting, moderately smokey element. Some herbal juniper comes through along with a citrusy element and light sweetness. Light bodied. Solid.

Bottle thanks to Walt. Pours with a hazed yellow body with a retentive white head. Aromas are smokey, leathery, grainy, pine, juniper. A touch of rubber. Flavors are spicy, smokey, bready, nicely malty, juniper, lightly spicy, grainy, lightly lemony. Clean. Lively bubbles, dry. Pretty tasty.

Unique and tasty -- always a winning combination. I love big, smoky beers and peaty Islay malts but sometime a lighter touch works really well, as is the case hear. Smoke and juniper blend with fruity, floral, herbal and yeasty notes.

Draft sample at the brewery. Pours a cloudy, pale yellow-gold color with a small white head. Aroma of smoked malts, juniper, herbs, pepper, straw, and funk. The flavor is very much similar to the nose. Maybe some pear or some fruit like that. Finishes smoky. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. Really interesting beer.

Like the subtle way the smokiness works its way through the taste. Interesting beer - one that makes me make faces as I puzzle over exactly what I am sensing. And then its was gone....

Sampled at Zwanze Day - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a well hazed yellow straw hue, touch of darkeness with a frothy whitish head atop. Decent layer, laces ok. Aromas are smokey, wood and gentle campfire, earth and a nice firm earthy and floral hopping on the nose. Bready malts, firm smoke, and some campfire. Gentle sweetness, kiss of fruit. Initial is medium bodied, maybe even lighter bodied with some gentle yet growing bitterness. Florals, smoked meat and firewood. Gentle barbeque wood, some bread, dough, gentle dryness. Middle is a touch of fruit, dough, and bready malts. Gentle smoke, florals, kiss of citrus. Mellow carbonation as the finish ends up as dry cereal and dry earthy hops. Not bad. Smoked element is appreciated.

750ml from the Rare Beer Club. Surprising golden effervescent pour. Given the descriptions I was expecting something somewhat darker. At any rate, interesting beer. Nose of dry hops, spice, and modest smoke. Very lively mouthfeel, prickly in places, with a long, dry finish. Tastes of smoked malt, hints of dry tart fruit, and fairly understated juniper. Nice with the holiday fare.

Hazy straw colored pour with a white head. Definite smokiness to the nose. Some sweet cracker malt, decent amount of lemon zest and orange, light tartness, and a bit of bread. Interesting flavor. Quite a bit of smoke, but well balanced by the sourness. Plenty of lemon, some sweet bread, cracker, and yeast. Pretty dry on the finish.
