COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Sour Brown Ale. In Britain, what started out as young or “mild” dark ale was once aged in oak barrels to make something that was likely similar to sour brown ales of East Flanders. Using a similar base recipe to Commercial Suicide Dark Mild, Ol’ Oi! is Jester King’s tribute to that tradition.

Got in a trade with cyde. 750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass; Blend 2, bottled 10/9/2013. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of sour cherry, green apple, raisin, plum, red wine, toast, caramel, chocolate, brown bread, oak, vinegar, hay, straw, grass, light leather, musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark malt, and oak barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, plum, red wine, caramel, toast, chocolate, brown bread, oak, vinegar, hay, straw, grass, light leather, musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. God amount of acidic tartness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, green apple, raisin, plum, red wine, caramel, toast, brown bread, oak, light leather, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Outstanding complexity and balance of fruity/funky/acidix yeast, dark malt, and oak barrel flavors; with a great malt/acidity balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately acidic, and fairly creamy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome sour brown ale! All around great complexity and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark malt, and oak barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on with the balanced acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Keg at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014, green session. 03/05/2014. Murky brown / caramel coloured pour with an off white head. Aroma is musty, sour, tart berry, sharp round the edges. Flavour is composed of smooth tart, some grain / wood tanin, cranberry and berry fruits. Palate is crisp with a little acid.

Aroma of soured red fruit and Brett. A reddish-brown hue with an ivory ring and nominal lacing. The palate is acetic. - subtle sour red fruit and vinegar. Subtle but very pleasing. Light body and moderate carbonation. Overall, very drinkable!

Sample @ Brewvival 2014. Deep reddish pour with a small head. Red berry and toffee smoothie. Some pennies and compost, earthy funk. Mellow tart flavors. Acidic red apple and forest fruits. Raspberry. Medium body, soft on the palate. Good.

Bottle, pours brown with thin off-white head. Aromas and flavor of sour fruit, heavy malt, caramel, Gouda, light vinegar, and sour apple candy. Finish on this is fast and forgettable. Didn’t have more than a couple ounces of this before moving on to a better beer. Cheers.

Sample at First Sunday, thanks west. A littels weet and nutty. Medium on the my unscientific sour scale. Finish is lots of red fruit, cherry, plum. A little thin and light on the finish though although the barrel does add a little more body to the overall

1st Sunday share from a recent trade. Damn wchesser you out did yourself on this one. Brown murky pour. Not overly sour, dark maltiness, prominent barrel characteristics that are really nice, faint bourbon, more vanilla, ripe berries. Really good stuff.

750ml bottle in a tulip. Pours dark brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of sourness/tartness, dark malts, whiskey and oak barrels, some vanilla and spices, and some lactic notes. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Average texture. A solid beer.
