Barrel-Aged Sour Brown Ale. In Britain, what started out as young or “mild” dark ale was once aged in oak barrels to make something that was likely similar to sour brown ales of East Flanders. Using a similar base recipe to Commercial Suicide Dark Mild, Ol’ Oi! is Jester King’s tribute to that tradition.

Tap at hops and pie. Clear dark red with a frothy beige head. Aromas of tart fruit, wood, light vanilla, musty earthy notes. Flavor is sour fruit, green apple, wood, vanilla and some funk on the end. Light to medium bodied, acidic with a dry finish. Lingering sour fruit.

Smells like minerals and malt. Taste is malty sour brown with a bretty mild to medium sourness. Medium body, medium frothy carbonation, and some foam.

Bottle. Pours brown with a ruby tint, soft white head. Smells like a brown ale that has been soured (surprise!). The sourness is most apparent, though there is an unmistakeable brown ale aroma underneath. Tastes similar. Most noticeable is its medium tartness. Medium bodied, average carbonation, tart finish.

750ml bottle pours out a muddy brown topped with a sand head. Nose is sour tart funk some fruit and barrel notes. Taste is more of the funk tart and a very nice end.

Tap at brewery. Pours murky, doo doo brown. Aroma is funky, dark dried fruit, a bit of cocoa, and vinegar. Nuanced. Taste is lightly tart, dark dried fruits, a bit of oak and vanilla. A bit of vinegar, but it’s well integrated. Medium body, medium carbonation. Nicely done.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2015 Bottle: Really deep chestnut brown color, opaque except for the very top sliver. Foamy, soapy beige head. Aroma loaded with sour bugs, lemon, tart cherry, woody tannins, yogurty lacto, mild acetic acid, faint perfume. Nice tart flavor; cherry skin, lemon, perfume, under-ripe prune, a touch of vinous booziness, lots of oak in the finish with some acidity that dries things up & puckers the gums a bit. Dry body, medium mouth feel. Nice.

Tap. The look is cloudy, a beige colored head, Amber red colored. The smell is fruit, wine, funk, tart, and ok. The taste is fruity, tart, acidic, vinegar, nice.

750ml bottle pours dark brown with light ruby edges and a big finger of head. Nose has some tart nutty cola and dark cherry with dried fruit and a hint of oaky funk. Taste has pretty well balanced lacto tartness, sweet and sour flanders-esque dark cherry fruit, dr pepper, a bit of peach. Finishes with some light sweetness, tart dark dried berries and cola, hinf of grape and bread, soft oak. Good, definite improvement on the base beer.

Hazy brown colour, off-white head. Aroma of cherry, lactic acid, Belgian oud bruin. Sour flavour, wood, cherry, sour berries. Finish lactic acid and a hint of red fruits.
