Red ale aged in oak barrels with wild yeast and souring bacteria. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and bottle-conditioned. This beer is a tribute to our good friend Russ Beadie. Thanks, Russ. Thuss.

Thanks to EricTeusink for sharing this at the park. First Jester King brew I believe. Always impressed with their artwork. Pours dark amber. Smell is tart berries, fruits, hint of vinegar. Taste is tart berries/cherries up front with the sweet malts and vanilla barrel character coming through and lingering. Loved the barrel additivie here. Sweet and tart, highly drinkable, nice carbonation. Good stuff. Not too tart.

Look: Pours with thick, large, off-white (light brownish hue) head. Relatively fast retention but leaves a nice thick layer on top, coupled with very nice lacing. Very deep amber, cloudy. Was surprised at how dark it is. A bit dull but still good tho.

Smell: Clean fruity sour, cherry, some wine character, light vanilla and counterbalance with musty, earthy funk. Some tartaric, acetic acid. Light caramel, amber malt sweetness underneath. Everything that was expected, well executed, balance between sour and sweetness plays out nice. When the temperature rises the funk gets stronger, but not annoying.

Taste: Relatively fast but smooth start with medium sour (cherry dominant note with lemon and raspberry notes behind) rises towards the end. Sour isn’t annoying, but still relatively in your face. Sour part stomps over the light caramelish middle, the balance is a bit off. Yoghurt lactic acid to detect. Very light tart, acetic also present - gives that wine feeling, doesn’t go into vinegar mode. Funk goes down compared to the smell. Full on clean fruity sour holds to the end, no hop bitterness to detect and at the far end some oak comes into play.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, lively carbonation, makes it fresh and easy to drink. Some coating with light dryness. Alcohol well hidden.

Overall: Clean, fresh, fruity sour with some light funk to play along but still meaty enough to stay relevant. Good representative.

Got in a trade with cyde. 750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, January 2013 bottling. Moderate gusher upon opening. Pours very hazy deep ruby red color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, red grape, toast, toffee, light chocolate, clove, oak, hay, straw, red wine vinegar, musty funk, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, fruity/acidic yeast, and barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, red grape, toast, toffee, light chocolate, clove, oak, hay, straw, red wine vinegar, musty funk, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Moderate fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, red grape, clove, oak, hay, straw, vinegar, light leather, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, malt, and oak barrel flavors; with a great malt/acidity balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and moderately slick/acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent sour red ale! All around great complexity and balance of malt, fruity/acidic yeast, and barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on with the balanced acidity. A very enjoyable offering.

Batch 2 bottle, thanks to beer_no_evil. Pours a nice red, with brown hue. Medium carbonation and a small head. Aroma is mild. A nice tart cherry smell, some bread and some oak. Nothing standing out too much. Taste is tart. takes a minute for the flavors to come forward. Getting some nice oak character in here, but nothing too funky...mild cherry...an almost lemon zest to it...some hay/grass in there as well. Finishes nice and dry with a lasting tartness.

Red wine, funk, woody, raspberries, cookie dough. Light fruity sourness, compote of peaches, very smooth, light plucky ending. Smooth, delicious, rich and most of all unique. Love it. (On tap at the brewery)
