COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
India Pale Ale brewed with nearly three pounds of hops per barrel and 15% malted rye. Dry, flavorful, drinkable beer with vibrant notes of citrus, tropical fruit and pine.

Note: This entry is the original Wytchmaker. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Wytchmaker Rye IPA entry. The original Wytchmaker bottles feature a small Jester King sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Wytchmaker bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

Appearance: the beer pours with a large white head that settles into a very nice dense head, the beer is a darker yet very hazy gold color, good head retention, good lacing Aroma: very strong spice, almost a sweet spice, citrus, orange, some bread, egg, yeast, some funk Taste: lots of spice up front almost reminds me of pumpkin, a certain sweetness hints, coriander, Palate: leaves mouth dry, has a slight bitter aftertaste, moderate mouthfeel, lively carbonation Overall: very interesting beer, sweet flavors with strong spice notes that remind me of pumpkins, still not a very sweet beer overall, bottled 11-4-13. Enjoyed 1-24-14 ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

BEENJAMIN (290) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JAN 11, 2014
750ml bottle at home - held to the light, pours a hazey yellow with a lasting frothy white head. The aromas are complex; bergamot, candied lemon peel, spruce, white tea, and grains. Taste is tart and dry with a faded bitter hop finish and is overall refreshing. The yeast strain in combo with the rye and hops create a spicy unique ale that I look forward to having again.

Very solid beer. Great hoppy Aroma, the Rye, yeast and hops work together nicely to give this beer a slight viciousness.

ROGUE (2099) - Newark, Delaware, USA - SEP 29, 2013
375ml bottle. Pours a cloudy burnt orange color with a two finger foamy bright white head, that slowly dissipates. The aroma has a lot of pine, as well as some biscuit malt and rye notes. Spicy rye bread flavor that is quickly joined by a very pithy bitterness; the combination gets really spicy by mid-palate and the spiciness continues into the finish. Moderate carbonation, creamy medium body with a great drying aftertaste.

Bottle shared at Pibar, Lausanne
Cloudy amber color, with dull hue, and large frothy head (the bottle is a slow gusher). The aroma is very nice, fresh hops, with light spicy character and a touch of cedar. Still too much carbonation, having an impact on the mouthfeel; malt flavor, with strong spicy character, leaning to cardamom and cedar; strong bitterness, with plenty of good hop resins, and some hop fruitiness, bitter oranges; long final.
Complex, not elegant, but very interesting.
