4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: AUG 27, 2007 Sampled on draft at the Monroeville PA location this beer poured a bright red-orange color with a medium sized yellow-white head. The aroma is strong grapefruit, pine and caramel. The flavor is sweet malts, caramel, piney hops and grapefruity hops. The finish is long, sweet and malty. The mouthfeel is thick. A very solid barleywine.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear medium brown, the off-white head lasts for the whole imbibing. Kinda wheaty toasted malt nose with pleasant caramel, brown sugar and toffee notes. Faint oaky hops might mean more tannins, but they cant reduce that boiling sweetness. Palate is thin, liquorous and lightly carbonated. Not as bad as it sounds, but frankly not as much as barleywine as a big and liquorous dark ale.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Caskc onditioned at Manchester, CT location. Served in a snifter with a sweet, fruity, vinous, caramel miraculous aroma. Hazy purple/plum mahogany color with a light tan head. Gorgeous. A lot of booze is detected in this beer throughout. Lots of bittering going on too. Chocolate malts in the finish with notes of fruitiness and roastiness. A little too boozy for my liking.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 28, 2005 [2/04 Springfield, PA - Fresh] Poured a copper color with a stickey small off white head, but no lacing. Aroma of caramel maltiness with a stickey sweet caramel malt taste, some vanilla, and a nice bittering hop / alcohol finish. Sweet and interesting.

Not a bad barleywine, though not all that complex. I had this with notalush at a NY location. It looks decent enough, with a dark ruby red body and a lush head. It is extremely syrupy sweet, and isn't balanced with hops really at all. The alcohol is obvious.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
NY location, "thundersnow barleywine" - figured they were probably similar enough, besides, there are enough JH brews clogging the database - served in 10 oz. snifter, dark red with nice lacing - aroma is intially and inviting mix of plums and candy, but when you swirl the glass, the unpleasant smell of rubbing alcohol comes at you - mouthfeel is a bit "soft" for a barleywine - flavor is mostly of caramel - some brown sugar in the end - alcohol burn at the end - nice, but out of balance.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Manchester, CT location. This was served in a 10oz. snifter. It was drawn from a beer engine, as this was a cask-conditioned brew. There was a rich mahagony color to the beer. There was a bit of a head to it, which took awhile to settle out. The aroma was sweet, malty, with hints of fruits. Also a hint of alcohol to the nose. This beer gave you a nice warming feeling as you drank it. Rich, complex flavors of fruits and malts. This was aged fairly well. This was many leaps and bounds ahead of a Barleywine that they made here a few years back. Superb!
