COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
John Henry Three Lick Spiker Ale is an imperial stout brew style that has been bourbon oak aged. This beer is brewed with three different dark roasted malts creating chocolate flavors and a dark appearance. Oats are also added for additional body and flavor. Combined with the pale and caramel malts, there are over 12,000 lbs. of barley in the brew. Cascade, Willamette, and Alsace Hops are the three hops added for a hoppy tasty and full aroma. After fermentation has been completed with our top fermenting ale yeast, conditioning starts and the fun begins. We condition our brew with bourbon oak and let the extended aging process take over. Hints of bourbon and vanilla from the oak come through in the aroma and flavor. This is a big beer that you can not pass up.

As soon as I open the bottle I can smell the oak. Poured into snifter. This smells great. Smells of whiskey, vanilla, oak, chocolate, a hint of alcohol. Pours dark brown with a thin beige head that dissipates fast. Taste is basically what you’d expect from the smell. Malt, chocolate, coffee, vanilla and whiskey. Though not overly strong, the alcohol is evident. Mouthfeel is pretty thin. All in all this probably won’t make any favorite list of mine, but it was a pretty good beer that I would drink again.

Pours deep brown into a snifter. Off-white head recedes leaving spot lacing. Sweet dark caramel and oak aromas. Thick with sweet dark caramel, molasses, oak and bourbon front to back.

Tasted from a 12oz bottle purchased at Discount Liquor about a year ago. Pours on opaque almost black, very dark chocolate brown with a bit of red tint and an average tan head that slowly recedes to nothing more than a thin collar of lace. The nose is very oaky with vanilla and cinnamon with some underlying caramel malt and a bit of roastiness. The flavor is the same, sweet vanilla and oaky cinnamon up front moving to some more malty and roasted nuts and finishing with a bit of chocolate bitterness. The body is medium with lively, mouth-filling carbonation, and a long oaky cinnamon and bitter chocolate finish.

Very strong caramel and smokey tones.. good hops, definitely a stout. Weak head. Pours very dark. Don’t think I’ve ever quite tasted one like this, the first sip to me tasted like carmel candy. It is a little sweet, but not overpowering. Aroma is smokey-sweet. All in all a good brew and I’m happy to buy this one when I find it on sale. I wouldn’t go out of my way to search for it though, it’s not that memorable.
