3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
750mL bottle. Poured a nice shade of warm amber with a short khaki head. The aroma picked up darker fruits, rum, and raisins with accents of molasses and toasted oak.. big and sweet overall, but not really that exciting. The flavor found sweet darker fruits, nutty notes, and molasses with accents of vanilla and tangy oak.. warm rum, molasses, and raisins on the long, warm finish.. tasty. Medium-bodied with a lot of barrel presence on the palate.. too sweet for my liking.. aiight overall.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Winter Beer Fest, Philly: I am sure that this beer was made with all the best intentions, but it just doesn’t come together. Pours dark amber with a white head. Aroma is light citrus and pale malts. The wood aging didn’t really do anything positive for this beer. Lightly sweet. It kind of just tastes like an old and not very good DIPA with half the flavor.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Got this one on sale for $4.99 at La Vista Liquor, great deal for such a strong beer. 750 ml. bottle poured into a standard pint glass. Appearance is dark amber approaching brown with a slight, ruby red tinge, certainly not a pale ale! Decent, two finger, beige head that leaves lacing. Aroma of oak, rum, brown sugar, light molasses, and bread. Taste is rather one dimensional, it has a sweet, rummy, oak character but has a thin mouthfeel for 9.4% abv. Has a slightly roasted malt flavor but is lacking in character, kind of watery and boozy, not enough backbone for an ale that is comparable to a barley wine. This is one case where more bittering hops would be appropriate. I’ve been so used to drinking world class beers lately, I guess I have a high standard.
Medium to full body, thin texture, average to soft carbonation, sweet, oak tinged finish. For being such a big beer it is lacking in flavor and distinction, probably won’t repeat.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Type: 750ml (25.9 oz.) bottle
Glass: Stone Ruination IPA pint glass
From: Cherokee Market Beer & Wine in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: June 21, 2014
Consumed: June 21, 2014
Poured a dark reddish, brown, opaque color with two fingers of frothy tan head. Didn’t notice any bubbles on the sides of the glass. Above average circular lacing along the sides. Above average retention on the top.
Smelled oaky wood, bourbon, rum, dark fruits, plum, purple grapes, caramel, toffee, faint chocolate, black cherry and light crayon.
Tasted slightly better than the smell. Lots of wood, then oak, bourbon, caramel, toffee, crayon, roasty nuts, some chocolate, rum and plum. Lingering boozy astringent taste on the tongue.
Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming, slightly bitter finish.
Just an OK strong ale. I was a bit disappointed as I was a big fan of the 3 Lick Spiker Ale.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, light vanilla, raisin, fig, plum, oak, rum, and toast/oak earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and rum oak notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, vanilla, raisin, fig, plum, oak, rum, and toast/oak earthiness. Light earthy oak/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, fig, plum, oak, rum, and toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt and rum oak spiral flavors; with a great malt/oak flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good oak aged strong ale. All around well balanced dark/bready malt and rum oak spiral flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep dark copper with nearly no head at all. Vanilla, dark fruit (raisin, fig, cherry), and oak. The flavor starts low and rolls forward, building with a quick finish. Interesting.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
750ml bottle, thanks to Caterwaul. Shared with local raters. Mostly hazy brown red color. Little off-white head, couple dots of lace. Fruity, raisiny rum barrel aroma in the nose. Hint of olive. Medium to bigger body, sort of lighter for 9%. Smooth, kind of crisp lightly soft carbonation. More dry texture. Bigger toasty kind of nutty malt presence, much more than the hops. A bigger bitterness though. Light sweet. Alright strong maybe the best of the John Henry 3-pack. Still though, a little excessively dry, thin, kind of metallic, with some earthy papery pseudo-notes of oxidization
