4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 tauruslw33 (69) - Erie, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 26, 2005
Pouring this bottle into a glass, I could smell a bitter chocolate and smoke. The color was brownish red. The foam was frothy which lasted a while then dissipated quickly after that. To my palate, there was a medium sweetness, moreso than most dark beers. The bitterness was not too overwhelming, I guess a medium bitterness. I have had more bitter lagers, which makes this a good beer. There was definitely a full and creamy body. Somebody stated that it was very carbonated, well it was not too carbonated in my region (and this is fresh and sat in my mouth very well). Overall, this has been one of the best dark beers I have had...should be labeled as a Black and Tan, which is more of what it tastes like.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 pacaus (49) - Dublin, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 17, 2008
Not bad. I thought it was a pretty good dark beer. I definitely tasted some malt and liked the rich color. I did find it lacking tat greatness that some of the other micro brews have though.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 rm0312 (36) - Idaho, USA - MAR 7, 2007
Looks good in the glass - very dark brown - just like a porter should. The off-white head was also appealing. After all that, the taste was a bit disappointing though. I love porters and this didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I like it well enough to finish the six-pack I received through my beer club in Post Falls, Idaho but I don’t believe I’d purchase it on my own.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ddenomme (36) - Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 24, 2004
Nice toasted aroma, smooth bitter taste. Little head, moderate lacing. Good colour, but taste is somewhat in the background... doesn’t really grab you. A very drinkable thing, but nothing to run after.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 pudds (29) - Brandon, Manitoba, CANADA - FEB 1, 2012
Aroma is light and malty. Color is much lighter than you’d expect in a porter, more a reddish brown than brown/black. Limited head which disappeared in a minute or so. Taste is smooth and slightly coppery - reminds me more of a red or brown ale than a porter - much as the color suggests. Medium carbonation with a pleasant lingering malt aftertaste. I feel like this beer would rate better if it wasn’t pretending to be a porter.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jacktripper (20) - CANADA - JUN 4, 2006
Pours a very dark brown with a mocha head. Aroma is of chocolate, cocoa and coffee. Flavour is much of the same with an added element of malt. Finish is quite smooth. Overall a good porter and probably the best Sleeman beer.

Well I didn’t expect much from this one, and it didnt deliver much either. Probably drinkable for those who like some bitterness but can’t take the alcohol. F... close to waer, too. Reminds me of a watery Budwiser.
1.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 3/20 cgreen (4) - Webster, New York, USA - MAR 9, 2006 does not count
was hoping for more depth from such a nice-colored porter--but it just isn’t there. Thin, slightly astringent, disappointing. Don’t bother with this one.

A porter that tastes promising in the first sip, but one quickly finds that the flavour is deceptively shallow. At first I couldn’t put my hand on how to describe the flavour, but I think it is best described as having a burnt popcorn taste. It has a beautiful colour though, kind of red/brown.
