When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

Had on tap at the brewery. Pours a refreshing looking dull orange with an agressive foamy head. Had quite a tart funk smell. A very unique taste. Very peppery. Leaves a hop tingle on the tongue. Paired well with my truffle fries and mussels. Good stuff as usual from this local brewery.

750 mL bottle shared at a tasting. Murky orange, thin creamy white head, good retention. Aroma of mild funk, stone fruit, pepper, citrus. The taste is tropical fruits, dry citrus zest, bready malt, mild funk. Medium bodied, lingering funk, low carb, mild lingering fruit. Very nice.

Pours a hazy yellow. Thick white head holds strong for a while. Funk Funk Funky aroma! Dank, body odor, lemon and did I mention funk! Taste of sour apricot, banana, a hint of spice and a nice almost creamy mouth feel round out the beer. As the beer warms the grapefruit becomes very apparent. The grapefruit lingers on the palate. Very good sour. Nice and funky.

Light gushing to huge, very dense, slightly yellowish, slowly collapsing head over hazy yellow-orange beer, finely carbonated. Citrus, yeast, Brett and/or other wild yeast, wild fruit, frying oil. Intense citrus, citruspeel, wild yeast; something meaty/oily: lots of esters and fusels. Bit dusty, and floormop variety included; soapy. Generally quite fruity character. Slick, bit burning - ’hot’ MF, medium bodied. Why do they all taste so similar, these USA wild ales?

Fra flaske på Mandag i annen, Cardinal mars-15: antydning til gusher, men skummet legger seg fort i glasset. "Oak barrel aged & bottle conditiones ale brewed with grapefruit peel, juice and peppercorns" iflg etiketten. Og grapefruktsmaken er behagelig til stede hele veien, på en mild måte. En nydelig surøl, balansert oig behagelig med passe bitterhet i ettersmaken.

Shared bottle at Cardinal (mandag i annen). Pours cloudy golden with big white head. Aroma of citrus and apple cider. Taste bitter and sour with grapefruit. Long lasting bitter aftertaste.

750 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7%. Oak barrel aged and bottle conditioned. Brewed with grapefruit peel, juice and peppercorns. Golden colour, large white head. Aroma of farmhouse kitchen, oaked apple cider and apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, citrus and green peppercorns. The flavour is distinctly peppery and oaky, moderately sour (not as much as some other JP beers), notes of grapefruit and oaked cider. Pepper and fairly bitter hops in the finish. Interesting beer.

Gold pour some head. Aroma of acetate, hop resin, strong acid, white grapes. Tastes very minerally, brett explosion. Some chemical, slight ammonia, wood, paint chips, eath, medicinal. Not sour at all. Baffling... Leaves that brett residue. Slight tingle finish, slight dry.

Damico (2766) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 19, 2015
Pours mostly clear orange golden with a huge creamy white head. The aroma brings sweet and soft velvety tropical fruit, refreshing in the nose. Flavor brings dry zesty oranges and tropical fruit, some pineapple and green apple the blend with a nice tartness and funky sour yeast so pleasant in the tongue.

Fonefan 300814. Golden colour with an off-white head. Aroma is brett, apricot, orange, lemon. Flavour is brett, spices, yeast, sourness, apricot, orange, lemon. Very nice beer.

glennmastrange (2371) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - FEB 12, 2015
Bottle. Moderate grain, hay, dried grass and lemon for the malt and hops, heavy barnyard for the yeast, with apple, ginger and grapefruit in the background. Head is average sized, frothy with larger bubbles, white, with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy light amber. Flavor starts moderately to heavily acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter and sour. Palate is on the lighter side of medium, dry with a fizzy carbonation. Damn! A righteous beer, a Saison with a wild punch.
