When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

Had on tap at the brewery. Pours a refreshing looking dull orange with an agressive foamy head. Had quite a tart funk smell. A very unique taste. Very peppery. Leaves a hop tingle on the tongue. Paired well with my truffle fries and mussels. Good stuff as usual from this local brewery.

Unlike the Anchorage bottle I had last Summer, this bottle does not have a date on it. However, after initial smell and taste, nothing seemed off so here’s the rest. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a slim white finger’s worth of foamy white head that dissipated and left a nice lacing glossing around the sides of the glass. The smell had a big sweet sticky citrus to a delicate grapefruit goodness. Floral and spicy peppercorns dance underneath my nose as well. The taste combined all of the previously mentioned elements to sweeten and enliven the floral spicy notes wildly underneath and over my tongue. There’s a big spicy citrus aftertaste and a dry citrus finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping to sessionable quality about it. Nice spice rolls over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good sour/wild ale that I could have again. It’s nice that it showed up in Alaska. Thank you Shelton Brothers/Jolly Pumpkin for giving up your dead.

Rated based on notes taken 28 Dec 2014 -- On tap. I ordered this thinking it was a sour. Pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a very lemon forward refreshing saison.

Tart jolly pumpkin funk all up on this. Oak, hay, floral, citrus, and dust. Taste is sharp tartness with some bitterness and next to no sweetness.

75 cl bottle @ tiong
Aroma has nice, funky bretta tones, some grapefruit and orange. Flavour has grapefruit, baking stuff, some orange juice and some minerals. Also some salty notes typical to the brewery. Refreshing and nice bretta-beer, JP sure knows how this style is done correctly.

750ml bottle from Bierkompass

Pours orange with a smooth head. Aroma of oak, wood, tart berries, hints of spices and vanilla. Taste is sweetish, oaky and woody with some fruits, loads of bretta, vanilla, hints of tart berries, grapefruit, sourness, spices and vanilla. Finish is oaky with loads of vanilla, tart berries, bretta, slight sourness, spices and hints of fruits and sweet toffee. Quite balanced and tasty sour ale. Nice one.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy golden amber pour with a substantial frothy white head, orange, pineapple and cider vinegar aroma, taste has some really juicy fruit action of pineapple, lemon sherbet, some funk, sour but not lip puckering, tart apples, vinous, nice brett action, excellent.

Bottle at home. Pour is clear orange with a big white head and sticky lacing. Big candy oranges, marmalade, grapefruit peel, some white pepper, somewhat floral, lemongrass, and pears in the aroma. Taste is big peppercorns, orange peel, grassy, straw, somewhat yeasty, apples, and honey with a lightly tart finish. Medium body with high carbonation. Somewhat sweet, though highly spicy from the peppercorns. Not bad.

Aroma is Belgian yeast, grapefruit juice and mild musty notes. The flavor is Belgian yeast, grapefruit juice, malts and a slightly alcoholic/very tart finish.

[6930-20141129] Bottle. Citrus lemon aroma. Hazy, orange yellow body with a quick foamy off-white head. More citrus and lemon and grapefruit notes in the flavour. Medium body is a little dry. Interesting. (8/4/8/4/16) 4.0
