When introspection fails, itís time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

A fascinating beer, really great aroma reminiscent of grapefruit juice with a nice acidity but also a sort of brett C funkiness. Taste has light grapefruit juice sweetness without really any of the sort of acidity I expected from the nose, more of a rural farmhouse character. One of the best beers Iíve had from either brewery, honestly.

750 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7%. Oak barrel aged and bottle conditioned. Brewed with grapefruit peel, juice and peppercorns. Golden colour, large white head. Aroma of farmhouse kitchen, oaked apple cider and apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, citrus and green peppercorns. The flavour is distinctly peppery and oaky, moderately sour (not as much as some other JP beers), notes of grapefruit and oaked cider. Pepper and fairly bitter hops in the finish. Interesting beer.

Gold pour some head. Aroma of acetate, hop resin, strong acid, white grapes. Tastes very minerally, brett explosion. Some chemical, slight ammonia, wood, paint chips, eath, medicinal. Not sour at all. Baffling... Leaves that brett residue. Slight tingle finish, slight dry.

Pours mostly clear orange golden with a huge creamy white head. The aroma brings sweet and soft velvety tropical fruit, refreshing in the nose. Flavor brings dry zesty oranges and tropical fruit, some pineapple and green apple the blend with a nice tartness and funky sour yeast so pleasant in the tongue.

Bottle. Moderate grain, hay, dried grass and lemon for the malt and hops, heavy barnyard for the yeast, with apple, ginger and grapefruit in the background. Head is average sized, frothy with larger bubbles, white, with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy light amber. Flavor starts moderately to heavily acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter and sour. Palate is on the lighter side of medium, dry with a fizzy carbonation. Damn! A righteous beer, a Saison with a wild punch.

Unlike the Anchorage bottle I had last Summer, this bottle does not have a date on it. However, after initial smell and taste, nothing seemed off so hereís the rest. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a slim white fingerís worth of foamy white head that dissipated and left a nice lacing glossing around the sides of the glass. The smell had a big sweet sticky citrus to a delicate grapefruit goodness. Floral and spicy peppercorns dance underneath my nose as well. The taste combined all of the previously mentioned elements to sweeten and enliven the floral spicy notes wildly underneath and over my tongue. Thereís a big spicy citrus aftertaste and a dry citrus finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping to sessionable quality about it. Nice spice rolls over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good sour/wild ale that I could have again. Itís nice that it showed up in Alaska. Thank you Shelton Brothers/Jolly Pumpkin for giving up your dead.

Rated based on notes taken 28 Dec 2014 -- On tap. I ordered this thinking it was a sour. Pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a very lemon forward refreshing saison.

Tart jolly pumpkin funk all up on this. Oak, hay, floral, citrus, and dust. Taste is sharp tartness with some bitterness and next to no sweetness.

75 cl bottle @ tiong
Aroma has nice, funky bretta tones, some grapefruit and orange. Flavour has grapefruit, baking stuff, some orange juice and some minerals. Also some salty notes typical to the brewery. Refreshing and nice bretta-beer, JP sure knows how this style is done correctly.
