When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

A fascinating beer, really great aroma reminiscent of grapefruit juice with a nice acidity but also a sort of brett C funkiness. Taste has light grapefruit juice sweetness without really any of the sort of acidity I expected from the nose, more of a rural farmhouse character. One of the best beers I’ve had from either brewery, honestly.

Serving: Bottle. Cloudy amber pour with a large and lasting white head. Plenty of funk going on in the nose and rightly so considering who the brewers are. Yeast, peach skins, a little pinot grigio, and lemon on the tongue to go with the funk. Nice.

Light golden body with a mild haze and a half inch of pure white head. Aromas of funk, spice, honey, brettanomyces. Similarities to white wine. Lovely funk character. Noticeable differences from the Calabaza Boreal brewed in Anchorage. This beer is more venous and funky, while the Anchorage version had more vibrancy. Still, both outstanding beers. The subtle nuances are quite enjoyable. A delightful beer to sip and enjoy.

On Draught, a bunch of times...
Pours a light blonde with a huge head and good lacing on the glass.

The aroma is funky with some tart fruit, peach, lemon and citrus rind. It’s aromatic, pungent and inviting.

The flavor is dry but with a nice zesty fruit character and some bright hops to match. It’s got a nice tart fruit character with some peach, lemon, and grapefruit. It’s lightly spicy, and fairly oaky. It’s got a nice earthy briny character to it too

A real favorite from this brewer, and something I hope isn’t a single batch release.

Tap at Scheras Zwanze day. Pours orangeish yellow with minimal head. Smells of grapefruit and lemon. Taste of dry citrus fruits. Decent beer.

Tap at Schera’s at Zwanze Day 2014. Hazy golden yellow pour with a frothy head. Nice aroma of lemon, wheat, funk, and that unique Jolly Pumpkin aroma. Finishes a bit dry with some mild lemon tartness on the tongue. Good.

Bottle. Musty, lightly funky orange peel and malt aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Musty, bitter grapefruit peel and light wheat malt flavor. Typical JP funkiness.

Opaque light golden and thinnest bubbly head. Spritzy lychee and white grapefruit. Initial taste is so juicy melon and pineapple, dizzying malt and sherbert. Juicy and lush. Surprisingly tropical and fresh tasting. Sultry. Finishes strong lychee and grapefruit bitterness. Gorgeousness.
