When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

A fascinating beer, really great aroma reminiscent of grapefruit juice with a nice acidity but also a sort of brett C funkiness. Taste has light grapefruit juice sweetness without really any of the sort of acidity I expected from the nose, more of a rural farmhouse character. One of the best beers I’ve had from either brewery, honestly.

Bottle shared with Maryanna joe al and pat. Pours hazy golden with nice head. Shell salt, Passionfruit, lemons, Wood mostly oak, lots of brett, minerals. So juicy and tropical. Really nice.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Tanasbourne. The first pour is crystal clear, golden yellow with a dense, white head with excellent retention and lacing. The nose opens with an intriguing blend of Galaxy hops (pineapple juice-like), grapefruit and spicy, clove-like Brett funk. Earthy, farmhouse-y, moderately spicy with the pepper complementing the Brett expression quite nicely. Swirling the glass brings some sulfur as well - or is that the combination of black pepper and the hops? A touch smoky, not unlike black cardamom. The palate opens bright, crisp, snappy with a pronounced Brett character with flavors of clove, white pepper, barnyard, a touch of honey and a pronounced bitterness. The bitterness is a blend of hoppy, oily bitterness, a citrus (grapefruit) peel bitterness, a mild pith-like astringency, and a touch of spicy astringency. The spice character grows on the mid-palate with earthy and smoky black cardamom, white pepper and clove. Pineapple juice-like fruity sweetness is present. Drying on the finish, this beer is light in body and fairly airy on the palate. While the bitterness does keep me from drinking large sips, this is an excellent beer. Very highly recommended.

Virkelig en intens smag og er man til vildtgæret er denne øl, noget for en. En duft af citrus og smagen af denne er også tydelig.

Bottle split at Craft Clerko, thanks to Kenny, 30/09/14. Hazed orange amber with a moderate off white swirl and edgeing. Nose is tangy mandarin, citric peel, bitter apricot, smoke, spice, musty wood rumbles. Taste comprises tangy citric rinds, light grapefruit, spice, bitter orange, straw, earthy, tartened tropical tunes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, tarte citric rinse in the close. Shades of ’Here comes the Lilt Man’ with a sour rinse. Decent.

Poured from bottle into tulip. Nice bright aroma filled with grapefruit and spicy pepper. Good soft mouthfeel with a moderate amount of sourness. Lots going on in addition, too. However, the finish is excessively bitter and destroys the fragile balance of the rest of the taste. Its too drying and sharp and doesn’t mesh well with the pleasing and soft sourness of the beginning of the taste. Its jarring and unpleasant and took me a while to get used to it. Ultimately, i couldn’t get past it. YMMV.

Craft Clerkenwell. Bottle tasting. Hazy gold beer, decent fluffy white head. Airy palate, semi dry. Good fine carbonation. Very airy malts, mild sweetness. Good brett, mild but slightly savoury. Light floralness and lemon tang, lemon rind. Touch of grapefruit marmalade. Light semi dry finish. Very tasty and nicely joined up.

75 cl bottle.
Pours golden color with a small head. Quite fruity aroma, faint spice notes and yeast. Fruity flavor also, some hop notes, grapefruits and distant wooden notes. Bitter palate, dry finish. Quite nice.

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden colour with a small head. Aroma of grapefruit, orange sweetness and floral notes. Rich flavour of floral hops, raw grapefruit, funk, mild spiciness and tart wooden notes. Medium bodied and a dry, tart, bitter finish. Fizzy carbonation. Grapefruit overload.

Sampled at Where the Wild Beers Are, 6/7/14, Jolly Pumpkin version
Golden colored beer. The flavor has some fruit with a nice funky balance to it. The sourness is present, but sufficiently mellow to allow the other flavors to shine. I enjoyed this.

This is an example of a sour I do enjoy. Good flavorful saison, some bitterness, not overbearing sourness.
