DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA Nov 30, 2007 poured a cloudy golden color.the nose was citrus with bread.Flavor had more of the citrus and malts. This finished off with citrus and spicy. pepsican (884), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Nov 29, 2007 Updated: Mar 16, 2008Poured a hazy gold with thick head. Smells of sour citrus. Tastes a bit like old oranges, pineapple, and sweet pickles. Lots of odd flavors going on, lots of funk. Very carbonated. I just don’t know what to think of this one. One glass would have been plenty but I’m left with a large bottle. axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 28, 2007 Complete with J.P.’s trademark 5 minute gush. After things settled down there was a frothy foam left atop a very cloudy brown orange body. The aroma is earthy funk and moldy orange peels with hints of sweet clementine oranges. The flavor has that same dirty orange peel taste followed by just enough citrus to balance out the finish. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Nov 24, 2007 Spicy citrus and pineapple aroma. Light golden orange colors with a bubbly rich white frothy head. Flavors of light citrus and spiced pickle juice. Slight gueuze qualities. Decently rich palate, slightly creamy, light fruity bitter duration. Overall this is a light and enjoyable although not outstanding saison. kseecs16 (865), Naperville, Illinois, USA Nov 23, 2007 Bottle at the Beer Bistro in Toronto. A funky spicy smell accompanies this hazy straw colored beer. An odd almost manurelike scent comes off this one as it warms but is surprisingly inoffensive. Very foamy head that laces the glass tremendously. A touch spicy with a tart citrus bitterness. Light and effervescent on the tongue. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Nov 21, 2007 Wow this is nasty! Pours a yellow color with an enormous head that is pillowy and actually has strange mini globe like shapes in the head. Smells lemony and sour. Tastes aweful! Something like a petting zoo floor on the tongue. It is sour and funky and has an offensive spice. No thank you, drain pour! swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Nov 21, 2007 Bottle @ Coles Buffalo NY. Nice funky yeasty earthy aroma. Golden. Medium carbonation. Funky & slightly sour Jolly pumpkin taste. Some citrus presence. Good hiddenvariable (194), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 18, 2007 Updated: Jan 1, 2008bottle. pours a hazy honey gold with a sizable white head that lingers and leaves big lacing throughout. smell is sort of lemon pine with a hint of sour apple and some musty funky stuff. different from what i normally drink for sure. taste is kind of woody with those funky notes from the nose and finishes with a bit of sharp pine sol. palate is tart, with a touch of sweetness, a good bit of sour, and some hop bitterness that kind of caught me off guard. medium to light in body and fairly heavily carbonated for a good bubbly mouthfeel. definitely different. it may take some getting used to.
re-rate: it did take some getting use to, and now i’ve gotten used to it. strangely, the description is about the same, but the scores are slightly higher. let’s change my description of the taste to lemon, funk, some floral hops, and a bit of spicy honey malt, and call it a wash. as with other jolly pumpkin beers i’ve had, this is extremely quenching, and works exceptionally as a final beer of the night.
