One of Bam's brown eyes is, in fact, black. When mischief reigns supreme, it positively glows. Dedicated to the dark side; smooth, dark, incredibly delicious as only a Jack Russell with bat wings can be.

Bottle, batch 262, 263 from Bevmo La Jolla. Poursa hazy ruby pour with medium beige head, lacing. Also, as I noticed later on, a nice chunk of yeast floating on the bottom. Aroma is tart cherries, raspberries, mild wild yeast notes with a touch of mustiness. Flavor has tart-sour fruitiness - berries, light citrus. Slight medicine undertones, light herbal bitterness throughout. Finish has bright hoppiness, bitterness and lingering vinuous fruitiness. Mellow, light mouthfeel - maybe even a little too light. Sourness coupled with bitterness a very nice combo in this very interesting brew.

750 ml bottle: An awesome sour apple, sweet, yeast, a little bit of caramel malt and some fruit undertones. Appearance is a deep dark reddish brown with a thick tan head that lingers for a while. Taste is subtle but very refreshing. The notes in the aroma donít really pop. Nice and tart with some lingering yeast. Palate is nicely carbonated, lip feel is bubbly, mouth feel is light with a lightly malty aftertaste. Overall, Itís pretty good stuff. Not as good as the regular Bam or the ES bam IMHO. Cheers!

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2009 bottle shared at tasting. Pours a muddy chocolate brown with no head. Smell is fresh, tart, and fruity vinegar, and cherries. Taste is mild, dusty, and lightly funky with very faint tart fruity dark flavors. Bubbly mouthfeel, light, and mildly flavored compared to the nose again. Decent.

Bottle shared by Blake. Dark brown-red body. The aroma yields unripe raspberries and cocoa powder. The roasted malt really doesnít work with the citric, tart bam bier base. Itís a nice beer but Iíd rather have the standard edition.

Cloudy medium brown color with tan and khaki bubbly foam covering that leaves some lace. Sweet & sour, Sweettarts, dominates the aroma, dark fruit, mostly prune, some lemon zest and cocoa all follow. Tangy with a bit of spice, similar to the nose, but more dark. Generic dark fruitiness pervades with tart citrus notes, not as tart as the nose implies. Pretty acidic, but almost too light, almost watery feeling, but at 4.3% abv Iíll let it go somewhat. Nicely drinkable.

Bottle. Strong funky aromas up front with a mild sweetness in the background. Chocolate, cherries, and strawberry. Very dark amber pour with a solid thick head. Thick and assertive palate. Sour up front with a distinctly hazelnut finish and aftertaste. Highly enjoyable with a perfect palate and great depth.

Iíll admit, Im not the biggest saison fan, but this one just does not do it. 12. oz. Bottle. Opaque, reddish mahogony color. Decen creamy, amber head, but disapated a bit quick. Smells like a farmhouse, literally. Kind of sour and musty, cider-esque, maybe even a touch of BO. On the palate, its light and lean, a touch of smokey malts, sour brett, bitters, no definition to the falvors, their are all jumbled and unbalanced. Even trhe mouthfeel is disapointing, it just disapears like it fell off a cliff. Funk galore.

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2012 Bottle courtesy of jrob_21 -- thanks! 4/22/08

This was my first disappointment from Jolly Pumpkin. Itís not taht bad, but itís not on par with the other offerings from Dexter that Iíve enjoyed to date. The beer pours a very dark brown with an ample beige head. Sour brett-driven aroma, some lemon, some goat cheese, mild nuttiness, plenty of funk. The flavor is familiar Jolly Pumpkin sourness, but atop a much less supportive base than Iíve found in La Roja, etc. Somewhat thin, somewhat metallic (sucking on a bloody lip), roasty bitterness capping the sour brett to a non-so-successful effect. Oh, and in the flavor thereís some vomit, in a bad way, rather than in that inexplicably good way that I get with some lambics. Itís tolerably refreshing, but simply not in the upper echelon of either saisons in general or JP beers in particular.

Tap at the brewery 7/16/12

I forgot Iíd tasted this one, and was ready to write something about a surprising disappointment from JP. But I guess Iím consistant. To much leather and mud for a light saison, not enough sourness for a sour Fantome-style one. Not bad but not certainly not special like the Luciernaga that followed. The 3.0 stands.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown/ruby pour with huge rocky head that lasted forever. Aromas were very nice. Tart cherries and other fruits. Some caramel in there too. Flavor fell off a bit for me. Some earthiness and a bit sour. Not as much as in the nose, however. Finishes with some earth and dust. Not bad.

Different type of saison.. I did appreciate their creativity with this beer but didnít feel it did justice to the style. Darker color, fluffy beige head. The cherries hit your tongue as soon as you hit the head. Tart, very lactic. Thin on my palate. On tap at La Cav.
