This was my first disappointment from Jolly Pumpkin. It’s not taht bad, but it’s not on par with the other offerings from Dexter that I’ve enjoyed to date. The beer pours a very dark brown with an ample beige head. Sour brett-driven aroma, some lemon, some goat cheese, mild nuttiness, plenty of funk. The flavor is familiar Jolly Pumpkin sourness, but atop a much less supportive base than I’ve found in La Roja, etc. Somewhat thin, somewhat metallic (sucking on a bloody lip), roasty bitterness capping the sour brett to a non-so-successful effect. Oh, and in the flavor there’s some vomit, in a bad way, rather than in that inexplicably good way that I get with some lambics. It’s tolerably refreshing, but simply not in the upper echelon of either saisons in general or JP beers in particular.
Indra (1818), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Jul 15, 2008 750ml bottle, Batch 262,263. Interesting aroma, fruity, sweet, tart and very lightly roasty, with notes of red grape, black cherry, old wood, slight barnyard funk and earthiness. Deep, dark red-brown in color with a thickly foamy, light tan head and gobs of lace. Flavor is darkly fruity and tart throughout, hints of berry here and there, dry and lightly coffeeish with semi-sweet cocoa and traces of black olive, port and ash on the finish. Very well-carbonated and gently sour on the palate, body is light and airy. Certainly pleasant and seemingly unique. travita (662), Lewisville, Texas, USA Jul 8, 2008 Brown color with a nice cream colored head. Smell is apples, other fruit, a little tart, and spices. Taste is tangy, fruits, some yeast. Interesting beer. Not bad a little different. darkguardian (139), Florida, USA Jul 6, 2008 22oz bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours an awesome dark mahogany color with a densely packed long lasting beige head. Nose is awesomely sour and funky with hints of candied fruits and spice. Heavy nose, almost like an ABT. This beer is incredibly underated in my opinion. Very unique stout like flavors up front with toasted malts giving way to a spicy finish with light sourness. Very drinkably but the palate is very full. This beer is a marvel of design. Absolutely terrific. 1_2many (142), Ohio, USA Jul 5, 2008 Bottle from bigmmartin. This wasn’t very good in my opinion. I’m not sure what was going on but there wasn’t much aroma to this at all. Just a little yeast. Extremely bland with just some very mild sourness. I’m sorry but this really didn’t taste like much of anything. More water than anything to me. I want to try this again after seeing other reviews to make sure my palate wasn’t inhibited in any way while I drank this, but for now this was extremely disappointing. Bigmmartin (137), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 5, 2008 Bottle: This is an overall disappointing Saison. Pretty bland, with not much to speak of as far as aroma or flavor. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t really get much taste from this beer. Of course it has a yeasty farmhouse aroma, but that’s about it. Kind of boring, but not horrible.
