kepano (239), Meudon, France Apr 2, 2008 Second in our Jolly Pumpkin diptych, I was surprised to find a striking similarity between La Roja and Bière de Mars. Suggesting the weathered planks of a ship, the body glows of a deep orange under a brumous cream-colored head. The nose is what veritably likens the two beers. The matching funkiness implies a strong influence from the barrels that may be masking their individuality. Still, I found the Bière de Mars less tight, showing more banana and green apple, as well as nutmeg, allspice and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is dry and aggressively carbonated, which sadly erodes some of the flavor. Red apple, blueberries and a leathery sourness are welcome tonalities, however. I preferred La Roja for its kinder texture and affable mascot. (20/05/07)

Dry fruit, brett, citrus finish.
Very dry, refreshing. thewolf (4976), Kolding, Denmark Jul 1, 2009 Bottle, bought @ Ølbutikken, Cph.
Pours hazy light brown with a nice, staying, creamy beige head. Aroma has notes of raspberries, brett, light roasted notes, oak, apples and a slight pepperiness. Highish, prickly carbonation, fine and light mouthfeel. Flavour has brett, oak, super dryness, light apple. Some roasted notes in the background with some milky chocolate and grapes. This is the winter beer, morphing into a spring beer. Nice! WakeandBake (366), Greenville, Michigan, USA Jun 14, 2009 Updated: Jun 15, 2009Bottle. My first JP and first Bière de Garde , batch #256. Impression is tart. Full bodied with frothy carbonation. Flavor is barnyard mild, lightly tart, with cherries and/or red skinned plums. Finishes smooth, slightly tart, slightly Brett, slightly fruity, and incredibly delicious. amg800 (13), Michigan, USA Jun 8, 2009 Dark amber hue in the glass. flavor is fruity tart. Carbonation keeps it interesting on the tongue. Very enjoyable, don’t share with your promiscuous beer friends, keep it to yourself. Rune (2403), Tromsø, Norway Jun 6, 2009 Bottle, batch 346/348, bought at Ølbutikken and shared with Skinnyviking. Dark amber hue with a filmy layer. Tart aroma with notes of yeast. Rounded flavour of fruity tartness, caramel malts and spices. Quite lively carbonation. Slow building and a bit heavy to drink. Average to my palate and rating (Copenhagen, 17.05.2009). MrBunn (1316), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 5, 2009 Bottle (batch 346/348). Pours a cola like color with a rootbeer head and thick aromas that I can pick up at a distance. Sweetness, earthiness and tartness/funk are all there... almost like brown sugar got left in a barn overnight. I really liked this one... it is fairly thin, but the barrel and funky yeast go nicely together and make this a perfect drink for summer. Kind of zesty and refreshing, while still being very interesting.
