TheEpeeist (1430), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 24, 2008 25.4 oz bottle, batch 256. Dark reddish brown with a lacy balsa head. Nose is light lemon funk, chamomile and clover with a trace of honey. Subtle and evocative. Juicy with a soft tang. Pretty sour at first. Not what i’d expect from a Bière de Garde but i guess this is the Pumpkin twist. A few sips in the tartness smooths out revealing some cherry, almond, cinnamon and toffee. nhorween (639), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 10, 2008 Bottle (batch #256), thanks sersdf. Chestnut color with a whipped egg-white-like head. Smells slightly flemish - oak, funk, spices (clove, cardamom), apple pie, hay, cheesey. Pithy flavor with more funkiness. Tartness left on the lips. Tonic water aftertaste and light bodied. Not my favorite JP, but it has it’s merits. mj (4975), Colorado, USA Aug 31, 2008 Updated: Sep 9, 2009750ml bottle, batch 256. Purple brown colored body, mostly clear but still has little light penetration. Nose is wondrous... there considerable dried fruit in the nose and flavor: dates, raisins, apricots, black cherries... it’s nutty and pitty and woody throughout... there’s a mild acidity (resembles oud bruin) and a light lactic tartness as well, and the dryness of the oak is easily evident. Rich and tangy tobacco and dried apricots, turns more towards prickly yeast and oak on the back. The recent batch of the grand reserve remains one of the best beers I’ve ever had, and this batch of regular Biere de Mars is also amazing, no surprise. Seems like it’s something with cellar potential as long as it doesn’t get to lactic. mcox90 (618), Wilton, USA Aug 17, 2008 Bottle, batch 256, courtesy of mcbackus. First off, this has to be one of the most gorgeous beers to look at. I must have spent ten minutes holding my snifter up to the sun admiring the ruby red, clear brown color with a thick foamy off white head. Aroma is a funky mix of earth, wood & fruit. Palate is a sour tartness with lively carbonation. At first I was put off by the sour flavor, but after a while it grows on you. We got flavors of green apples, cherrys, oranges, lemons, vanilla bean, all with an woody flavor in the background. Thank you Matt, looking forward to more Jolly Pumpkin brews. Boutip (2334), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jul 30, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Secret Santa: Poured a clean copper color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma is zesty, orangey and very funky. Taste is also a typical JP mix between some orange, lightly sweet lemon with some distinctive barnyard and bretty notes. I think I detect some spices but there are not too prominent and might come from the yeast used in this beer. Full body with good carbonation and no distinctive alcohol. Very well done again from a brewer that just can’t stop to amaze me. djtimeless (170), Florida, USA Jul 13, 2008 Pours out copper- brown. Light colored head. Sweet with a nice tart finish. Very complex, woody, fruity, a little funky. Great brew, tasty. smith4498 (825), Miami, Florida, USA Jul 7, 2008 Pours dark copper with tan head. Funky sour aroma. Sour apple flavor with caramel and oak. Medium body with lively carbonation and a dry, tart finish. Very nice. ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jul 6, 2008 Bottlefrom Knightly Sprits in Orlando! Thanks Alan! Batch 256. Tart fruity aroma. Tart green apples and a funky twist!
