COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
March 15, 2012 a tornado tore through Dexter, missing the brewery, but not all of our neighbors. What could we do to help? Hmmm. We do know how to make beer. So make a beer is what we did. This beer. Teaming up with co-conspirators Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company, Schera’s and the Abu Nawas Beverage Company to create a collaborative beer like noneother.

A dark and smoky sour Saison full of rich aromatic coffee and the spicy heat of a secret Algerian spice blend. Proceeds go to the Dexter Relief Fund.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/24/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear nearly opaque very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, toast, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, pepper, clove, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funky yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of dark roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, toast, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of fruity tartness and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, cocoa, chocolate, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funky yeast flavors; with a great malt/tartness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly acidic/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding spiced dark saison style! All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funk yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

2 year old bottle at Hopleaf! Pours unclear dark thick roasted chestnut black in colors with a creamy darker beige head. Aroma brings light sweet smokiness with roasted coffee and spice. The flavor brings roasted malts and spice that are overbearing and mute a lot of the coffee flavor on a refreshing bubbly body. The secret spice is hard to describe, ras al hanut (sp) perhaps?

Bottle: The aroma consists of light sweet tarts, sour lemon, cola, roast, chocolate, and coffee. It pours a dark brown with some faint orange transparency when held to the light. It has a large beige head that has great retention and leaves behind a good amount of soapy lacing. The flavor starts with a quick dose of light sour lemon. There is a hint of cola in the background. The finish has light roasted coffee and a hint of pepper. It’s light-medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel. Overall, I wasn’t sure a coffee Saison would work, especially since I’m not a fan of the combination of roasty and sour, but this one worked pretty well.

Bottle:   Deep brown, a little muddy, moderate frothy sandy head, fairly nice lacing.   Coffee nose, freshly ground, with a hint of chile peppers.   I guess that would be the Algerian spice blend.   Soft spices on the tongue, noticeable coffee, no heat when you think the spice will be bringing heat.   A little tart on the finish, with lingering coffee.   If you said Saison I would have never guessed as the spices seem to shine, that and the coffee.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Spiced finish, along with coffee.   Light tartness.   The spices make you think the beer will have some heat, but it does not.   Very interesting to say the least.   Thanks Kevin!

One of the weirdest beers I’ve had. Crazy thick chunky head. Dark and toasty and tart.

Bomber at WTWBA - darker murky pour. Smokey slightly sour nose. Kind of a weird sour taste. Just okay for me.

This one poured a light brown with a beige head. Aroma was coffee, funk and smoke. Flavor was similar, just a weird combo of funk and coffee and some burnt rubber.
